JJD Advent Calendar 2025 (1 Viewer)

A balmy 2C in Devon this morning with strong winds cancelling the traditional Christmas morning dip in the Ocean.

Having already had a late night call from our daughter in New Zealand and a Christmas Eve party at our house it's a lie in this morning before calls to our other 4 children, and exchange of presents with my wife (nothing toy soldier related I suspect) and then off for a family gathering at my parents.

I will check in this evening for the last sketch while I wish you all a merry Christmas!

You try in life to be good and measured, decide what you are going to collect and say to yourself in a firm tone "no more new ranges". As a friend says "I am putting my foot down, with a firm hand, no more". Then John does this and brings out a range that you have wanted for a long time. Is he running a TS company or a cult? Just hoping for figures from the famous painting by William Warren.

Oh, heck yes, I’m in on this range!

I will try not to be in on this range but i might have to. My great grandparents x 8 were General Sir Robert Sale and Lady Sale. Both were heavily involved in the Afghan Wars

I have just had time to do some observations on the range and spread of the series that are featured in this year's Advent Calendar sketches, and this is quite interesting.

60% of the figures are based on North American based figures/events.

30% are military figures and also most all are British Empire.

So it seems to me this is a swing away from Toy 'Soldiers' and to Toy 'Figures' e.g Cowboys and Indians

Granny was Lady Florentia Sale and was also known as the Petticoat grenadier. Her and General Sale have portraits in the National portrait gallery and she is in the famous painting The Petticoat Grenadier. She wrote a book about her capture by Akbar Khan. She wrote a book, It has a big title… something like a diary of disasters in Afghanistan. I bought it for dad but havent read it.
We only found out a few years ago we were descendent of this great couple. My grandad tried to research his family, he knew very little as his mum died shortly after he was born, his dad died when he was a toddler and he knew nothing of his ancestry. Before pa died in 1993 he received a photo of his mums headstone in Wellington NZ and her married name was Florentia Hill. Until 2 years ago we thought Florentia was Italian but we were wrong, the Florentia named was handed down through the generations of this Indian based English family.
Families, you never know! and will be surprised who came before you.
So i would love it if John made figures of Fighting Bob, Major General Sir Robert Sale and Lady Florentia Sale. i dont need a new range but its not every day you can have a miniature of a remarkable ancestor……. So I would be in it for sure

I think Dr Brydon was also at the siege of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny so he knew all about resilience and hardship. If JJD does the last stand at Gandamack wow fantastic.

Like you, I have been looking forward to this one for the past 12 months, and this new sketch do provide some 'glimmer of hope' for 2016!

John
Me too, this follows the Captain Souter sketch from last year.

Just remembered also. The following was inspired by the awful reality of fighting in Afghanistan. When your wounded and dying and lying in pain and the women come out to cut off what remains then turn on your rifle and blow out your brains and go to your god like a soldier. Rudjard Kipling.

Really like the Last Stand at Gandamak idea. If JJD produces a group of figures like the famous battle painting for a stand alone display, I'll certainly make some room for it. Will have to see a number of prototypes to see what's planned for this range before starting in on another new series.

Anything John does with horses is hard for me to resist, so I will be looking at this one closely once it has been painted. Robin.

This painting is titled The Petticoat Grenadier and shiws Lady Sale as a captive of the Afghans

That painting Jason, certainly looks like where John has gained some inspiration. Robin.
