I prefer to collect well painted glossy toy soldiers, but still like many of the matt finish figures being made today. To get the best of both worlds I buy my favorite matt figures, repaint the faces, brighten the uniforms when needed, and gloss coat with clear Tamiya acrylic. Here's an example of John Jenkins Designs - Jacobite Highlanders.

That is a very good idea and these have turned out with a great finish. Gloss always seems to bring out the colours more.

What a really good idea! They look superb . What a good tip. I might have a go at that - thanks chum. johnnybach

They do look spectacular in gloss. I would like to see them done in gloss. I like the matte just fine but I really love gloss finish, too. Haven't got the guts or ability to repaint/alter my figures so I will continue to collect them as they are, but I do like the gloss finish... -- Al

They do look excellent with a gloss finish:cool::cool:

Cheers

Those are excellent. It gives them a whole new look: the realism of matte combined with the glossy look of traditional toy soldiers.

Did you apply the Tamiya gloss by brush or spray?

Randy

I love the look of these figures.
Very well done, Dragoon.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Below is another photo of JJD figures, this time it's Barrel's 4th Rgmt. at Culloden. Changed the legging from white to dark gray, brightened the coats w/ a more vibrant red and repainted the faces . They are then finished w/ Tamiya clear acrylic.

Ken,

These look fab! Have you had a go with any K&C figures?

Thanks Randy, I apply the gloss clear coat with a brush - although spraying that product might be better. Tamiya clear coat doesn't always 'play nicely' with other companies acrylic paints and over brushing can sometimes smear certain colors. All the same, I still really like the final gloss finish Tamiya clear coat provides. - Ken

Ken...I'm not a glossy man...but these really sparkle...the colors look so mush more vibrant now with the clear gloss spray...you did a great job on the leggings, jacket a nd face...great work...really impressive...

They do look good, and agree about the gloss bringing up the colours more that the matt.

Sometimes I paint a figure with matt, and fine deatils, but it still looks a bit flat.... gloss will lift that nicely.

Another collector who I paint for only wants gloss figures, so everything I do for him, be it toy of model finsh has to be gloss... he loves it.

Well done,

John

I just keep looking at these again and again.
I do like highly gloss figures very much and these just hit the spot.
Great idea. Sure have to think about that option seriously.

Thanks again guys for all the nice compliments.

Ken,

love the firing line, and that reminds me that I've got a couple of resin masters from John, kneeling and standing firing, Brit Infantry, so I may even paint them in this style, and see what comments I get back.

Yes John, give them the gloss look. It would be interesting to see what John J. thinks of his figures presented in that style. - Ken
