THE AGE OF ARTHUR
ANGLO SAXON/DANISH SHIELDWALL

Many thanks to Clive and Sue from Grey Goose Collectibles, for previewing the new Dark Age figures at the London Toy Soldier Show.

The perfect opponent for all those pesky Vikings!
The death of King Edward the Confessor of England in January 1066 had triggered a succession struggle in which a variety of contenders from across north-western Europe fought for the English throne. These claimants included the King of Norway, Harald Hardrada.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge took place at the village of Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire, in England on 25 September 1066, between an English army under King Harold Godwinson and an invading Norwegian force led by King Harald Hardrada and the English king's brother Tostig Godwinson. After a bloody battle, both Hardrada and Tostig along with most of the Norwegians were killed. The battle has traditionally been presented as symbolising the end of the Viking Age,

King Harold Godwinson and his retinue of Huscarls.

Harold's victory over the invading Viking army was short-lived. Three days after the battle at Stamford Bridge, on 28 September, a second invasion army led by William, Duke of Normandy, landed in Pevensey Bay, Sussex, on the south coast of England. Harold had to immediately turn his troops around and force-march them southwards to intercept the Norman army. Less than three weeks after Stamford Bridge, on 14 October 1066, the English army was decisively defeated and King Harold II fell in action at the Battle of Hastings, beginning the Norman conquest of England.

This series consists of 26 new figures.

Availability, starts form September 2019.

Very impressive set of figures. - Greatly appreciate these previews of upcoming releases. Allows collectors a chance to plan display opptions and to read up on the subject well before the first release.

Lord, another beautiful series from John. Always been fascinated by Harold, Stamford Bridge, and Hastings. -- Al

Woooooahhhh!

26 new figures...
how can one man produce so much!

soooooo......
pesky Vikings may be forthcoming with this?

I like this!

would love a small vignette of the fabled story of the Viking that defended the bridge...

a lone giant bare chested Berserker standing defiantly on a narrow bridge...
a couple of arrows stuck in his chest and thigh...
a giant Dane axe in each hand...
blocking the passage of the Anglo-Saxon army...
at his feet...
surrounded by a handful of dead Saxon that tried him and failed...
him daring the next one to cross...

that would be cool!

I hope this might be included in this series...

Stamford Bridge. That’s where Chelsea play :wink2:

Will this series include William the Conqueror. I can’t completely tell.

When I first saw these on the London Show photos I was really puzzled. I was thinking these were Germans which I collect but with different shields. Now that all has been revealed i'm a little disappointed but being a large Viking collector this is another series I will have to get. A Stamford Bridge scenario would be the ideal scene to replicate and suddenly all sorts of ideas are coming to mind. Looking forward to seeing the first painted figures. Regards Greg.

I had a very good look at these at the show - they really are quite exceptional. Here's a few pics I took - from the front:

thanks for the extra pics Bill...
those are awesome!
I'm amazed at the quality/quantity work John turn out...
he's a whittling fool!

I wonder how "Whiskey,Scalps,And Beaver Pelts" is coming along?

It’s funny, but another collector and I were chatting last week about JJD and his apparent slow sales in other lines and what he could do to boost sales. I jokingly made a comment about how he should do a “Dark Ages Europe” themed line since that was an obscure subject that hasn’t been covered in any great depth by other manufacturers... And then a few days later, JJD announces he is releasing Anglo-Saxon figures!

Very cool.

Those look great. Everything John does is fantastic. My only concern is that maybe he is over extending the number of ranges. I wish a few of the existing lines were fleshed out before another began. Maybe sales dry up or didn't pan out on some of those lines and he is moving on. Or I suppose you can get bored making a lot of the same figures from a certain era but I would really like to see some more Bushy Run and Ticonderoga figures. And cost is a consideration for jumping into a new line. At $40 per figure or more you are looking at least at a couple thousand dollars if you go all in.

It is ironic that Harold's resounding victory at Stamford Bridge over the Norsemen led to his defeat by the Normans who were descendants of Vikings from Normandy.

Dismissed this range initially not wanting to start a new series, but they are very nice and this many will take at least a year to release them all, from September, making it easier on the budget. Sorely tempted. Robin.

Wow, these guys are even better up close. Thanks 'Old Bill' for the additional photos.

Will definitely be collecting these Saxons to display on an individual wall shelf. If enemies are released later, they'll get their own shelf somewhere else in my studio. - Just that group of nine figures portraying King Harold and his huscarls is a great little display for the tighter budget or limited space.

JJD are the only figures I'm currently collecting, so I'm quite happy with the wide variety of series produced.

Great looking figures. I'm looking forward to seeing them brought to life with some paint. Well done JJD!

Brendan

For the "Ask John, Q&A session" at the JJD 2nd ANNUAL ASIA EVENT last August, I submitted a question whether he would ever consider doing a 1066 series.

He answered that there was a "Dark Ages" series coming in the future.

It seems I am going to get exactly what I wished for, and the figures looks even more fantastic, than what I dreamt of :D
