John Jenkins WWI Diorama (2 Viewers)

Montana Hats for AEF units in combat zones. These were worn in training before advancing to front.Overseas caps(fore&aft)
were the 'issue headgear when not in direct combat. Why JJD put advancing Gyrenes with these are a puzzlement. They look cool
but not used in forward combat areas. These were (Montanas)cut up for slippers for foot casualties in rear areas. Ergo,NO
cool Montanas in the FRONT.Other metal companies have put these out as well but using them for combat zone vignettes/dioramas
are fanciful and FARBY at best.

Out of curiosity, I did a google search:

80-90% of what I found in the way of images depicted WW1 USMC in campaign hats.

Although my grandfather was in the US Army AEF, I have dozens of photos that he took, collected, or was given, while in France 1917-1919. Most of these photos are either of him or members of his unit and quite a number of them show them wearing their campaign hats.

That set up is amazing.
I love the day in the life scenes

To to some extent, this item must have been synonymous with the Marine Corps at the time. I suggest that because the overwhelming majority of contemporaneous recruiting posters showed marines wearing one. Obviously, this wasn’t combat gear. However, Zach’s scenes are rear area in nature. I really can’t see what the rub is here.
