They pull me back in!
I just started collecting again after about a 10 year hiatus, and I'm already hooked. It's pretty sad how fast my addiction came back. I thought I'd just ease back into the Hobby. You know, a figure here, a tank there. Sadly no. I've gone the full monty and I'm buying figures left and right. That would be fine if this weren't such an expensive Hobby. To make matters worse, since I've been out of the collecting scene for so long, I'm now playing catch up. Trying to obtain old figures or sets that are now going for double or triple what they originally were. I'm 41 years old, and still get like a giddy schoolgirl when a new figure arrives. Anybody else feel like this?

Hi Erich,

I am considerably older than you and I still enjoy the excitement, the thrill, and the giddiness you describe when I obtain figures that enhance my collection. It is during those moments that I realize that a ten year old boy still resides within me. Like many collectors, I spend long hours admiring my collection and reflecting upon how fortunate I have been to obtain many items I only dreamed of owning one day. For me, the excitement and fun never seems to end.

So, to clearly answer your question, yes, I feel like you do. And, I would add that a great deal of the fun and excitement has been hugely enhanced by meeting, interacting, comparing notes, sharing information, and enjoying the fellowship with other collectors. Ours is a wonderful hobby that allows the ten year old child that exists within us to play endlessly with our favorite toys.

Hello Erich and welcome.

Well, I'd tell you to take your time coming back into the fold. Many collectors sometimes jump in and dont realize they are getting hosed till it's too late- not saying that happens very often but it does on occasion. I'm spending half of what I did 2 years ago and am finding that I am much happier because of it. I always pause before I consider buying a piece at a markup from retail and ask myself:

1.) What are the chances I could see this set again rereleased in the future?

2.) How much effort did I expend to earn the money that I am going to pay on the markup and was that effort really worth obtaining this set?

Look forward to seeing what you do. Yeah, prices have gotten pretty steep but there are bargains to be had plus a lot more selection from new and exciting companies. Welcome to the insanity!! {sm4}

I went in to get a few Crusaders/Saracens a few nights ago. Most of the ones I wanted though were gone, totally gone given my incapacity to chase them on ebay! The point I wanted to make though was the strong sense of disappointment! Sure, I got some other good figs I was after but not getting everything I wanted, hurt - just like I was a little kid again. The funny thing is I toasted my parents at their 50th Wedding Anniversary today - I'm slightly older than you, so childhood is a long way behind me - supposedly...

I fully agree. I went mad and crazy over the summer buying Napoleonics. I had been trying to stay focussed on Greeks and had warned myself that Napoleonics would be to the detriment of my wallet. Nonetheless, I racked up a good bit of King and Country and Collecters Showcase. Now, I am back on my "Greek diet". Hopefully the La Vie de Napoleon line by Blackhawk will not lead me to fall off the wagon again.

One suggestion to save money is to get the list of retailers off of the websites for the manufacturers, make a list of what you want, and send it to the retailers. I came away saving money and getting some hard to find picks at prices that were very near the original price. You would be amazed at what is available from brick and mortar stores in need of sales.

Yes I know what you mean, I stopped collecting when I lost that giddy feeling but the ever increasing number of new Aussie sets are tempting me back.
