Anybody out there think that WW2 is over-saturated? Of course it's all great stuff that continues to be put out by K&C. I would love to see some Korean War Marines at the Frozen Chosin with a vehicle or two and their counterparts. Just a thought. Would anybody be interested enought to buy? I know I would. That would be unique in itself and at the same time commemorate the soldiers world-wide who fought in that conflict..:D

I would be more interested in a Korean Range than, for example, Iho Jima. Love all the movies but just can't get into collecting that range.

Andy just said in this thread that he has no intention of making Korean War.

Incidentally, there's a new book about the Korean War coming out by David Halberstam. Maybe if that does well, that might change his mind. However, that could be a function that it's by Halberstam (who recently died). If it wasn't by Halberstam I doubt I would pick it up.

Aaaaah Brad, just cos that's what Andy said doesn't mean its set in granite tablets of stone. :)

Harry,

You couldn't be more right. When I first met him in 2005, I asked him if he would ever do WW I. He said "never." I wish I had taped the conversation. :D

Just do what the Jerries did Rob and slap on some whitewash. You know it makes sense.....:D

I to would like to see Andy produce some Korean War Marines at the Frozen Chosin with a vehicle or two and their counterparts. The withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir was not one our best times.
From this I see many great toy soldier sets. Marines helping each other and the wounded in the sub zero weather while under fire. Vehicles breaking down, being shot up. Look at the possibilities here.
This to me is over looked part of US Military History by the Toy Soldier Manufactures

The trouble is it just doesn't seem to appeal anywhere near as much as the other conflicts from History. It's not for nothing that its known as 'the Forgotten War'.From my experience at the IWM the Korean War just doesn't light the enthusiasm of many visitors, they want WW2 Tanks and planes and they want WW1 Trenches.Even though it involved US/UK Troops on a big scale i think people maybe see it as a North v south Korea War with little effect on the rest of the world. And i think this is reflected in the toy soldier world.I think it probably sits alongside Vietnam,Gulf War,Falklands War in popularity stakes as far as Toy soldiers are concerned.Sad but true.

Rob,
You're probably right regarding the lack of widespread appeal. Its a shame though, cos I personally would be extremely interested if a Korean range were to appear.

I hear you Harry,i guess when it comes down to it Andy's only going to make something if its going to sell enough to be financially viable.

Rob

The only Korean War items that have been, or are likely to be a sales success are those based on M.A.S.H.

Too bad it's all about money. These are such great figures all the way around, that they are collectible enough to be once called "commemorative", like the Iwo Jima sets. The original Iwo Jima sets seem to be highly collectible now. One, two or three sets of a different conflict such as Korea can't bankrupt any manufacturer, especially one as big as K&C. The Special Forces set of US Marines or the Humvee were not supposed to be quite so collectible but does anybody ever see them for sale on ebay? Never..

Figarti is making Korean War sets. K&C used to make several Korean War aircraft, including a Korean War version of the Corsair, an F86 Sabre Jet, and a MIG-15 in Chinese markings. Andy makes what interests him. If he gets interested in Korea, maybe he will make some "Strictly Limited" aircraft from the Korean War (I would love to add a MIG-15 to my collection, to fight the F86 Sabre I am in the process of obtaining). I bet he could sell 10-20 of each Korean War jet.

Hi Guys,

Re recent suggestions for K&C to do “Korean War”...like some of you I’m also interested in it but...I don’t think it would be all that commercial, sorry!

There’s a ton of battles and campaigns that I’m also very partial to...The Fall of Singapore...The English Civil War...Custer’s Last Stand...and on it goes. The easy part of this process is suggesting or coming up with an idea...the hard bit, that’s much more difficult, is trying to decide what will ultimately be successful. Take a couple of examples...a couple of years ago we “redid” our Iwo Jima Marines...our first series had been reasonably successful so, we thought, this second series should do even better...much improved sculpting and more realistic painting. At the same time lots of collectors, especially in the US, were saying “Yeah, US Marines in action...great!” But, sad to say it’s been a slow mover...not a total disaster...just disappointing considering the amount of time...effort and money we put into its development. If you don’t believe me look at what happened to Figarti’s US Marines...virtually all of them discounted to half price!!! Now don’t get your hopes up...K&C don’t discount...

Here’s the main problem...collectors get all enthusiastic about their own particular pet idea...And often they imagine that lots of other collectors will love it too. Alas and alack! It’s not always that simple. Here at K&C we try and look objectively at all proposals...yours...mine...ours...in order to determine how best to please and appeal to the majority of collectors...Not just in America but all over the world. Another point to ponder is that many of the ideas put forward on this Forum are purely “American” and may not always have the same appeal outside of the 50 states. I suppose that’s to be expected because most of the members are American and it is a US based forum.

But it’s a crucial point worth considering. Now having said all of this I do realize I have been known to change my mind on occasion and go back and relook at a subject that I may have neglected or rejected first time round.

To be honest Brad, I don’t recall ever saying “I would never do World War One”...But I’m sure I did say that I wasn’t ready or able to do it before because of other commitments at that time. However as far as “The Frozen Chosin” is concerned I’ll have to pass on it for the moment...

Best wishes and happy collecting!

Andy C.

P.S. Not many Americans know that British Royal Marines played a part in the retreat from the Chosin Reservoir. Back in the early 70’s, when I did my basic training at CTCRM (Commando Training Centre Royal Marines) at Lympstone in Devon we had a troop called “Chosin Troop”. It was for those Marine recruits who had been injured or “back-squadded” and needed more time to complete their commando training.

See so the Black Hawk War is still in play then right? I didnt hear him say no!
