Wow! I just saw a K&C T34 on ebay for $250.00. This was not a bid but a straight out purchase price (biddin not an option). Is that insanely high to anyone else or is it just me.
There were a couple of threads last week that discussed auction prices on eBay for K&C pieces, often listed as retired or rare, and which can still be found for their retail prices.
I think most collectors probably know enough about their favorite manufacturer's lines to know when a price is unrealistic, and most of the people who bid on those auctions probably haven't been collecting that long and really don't know anything about the items. Note that I am generalizing, I'm sure there have been exceptions, but I think it's generally true.
On the other side of the auction, I think most of you guys know which sellers are dealers, who know what they are selling, and so, their prices are more in line with you'd expect. But for every dealer who knows what he has, there are lots who don't, so we see auctions where an item is flagged just as "old", usually followed by, "so it must be worth something". I see that all the time on homecasts made from German or Junior Caster molds. "I don't know what they're worth, but..." Every time I see that, I want to say to the dealer, "Buy O'Brien's book, chucklehead, and educate yourself about the things you're selling."
Prost!
