Ron,
The Washington team used to be the Senators. I'm assuming you knew that.
The first edition of the Senators moved to Minnesota and became the Twinkies, circa 1960.
Then then started a new version but it still stunk like the old edition. That team lasted until 1971 when they moved to Texas and become the Rangers.
I was at that last game in 1971 (I was attending GWU). What a wild affair. I'll never forget it. Everybody was lambasting Bob Short, the owner, and he was an idiot, to put it nicely. Yankees had taken the lead, then Senators went ahead 3-2 (I think in the 7th). When the Nats came to the plate in the 8th, a few fans ran onto the field and were warned that a repitition would lead to a default. They got the fans off the field. The game continued. The Senators may have scored another run. Yankees weren't that good then. This was pre-Steinbrenner.
Then came the ninth. Oh, my god, it was like someone had opened the gates. Thousands of fans ran onto the field. It was like nothing you'd ever seen. Unbelievable. Everything on the field was taken, bases, lightbulbs, grass, you name it. In the stands, people were trying to take off seats. Momentous end to Washington baseball until the Nationals came along.
And, in case you wondered, no, I didn't run onto the field or take (or try) to take anything.
