Guys...

Here is one of the finished tigers. Weathered up and awaiting the collector to decide if he wants unit markings or not.

Looks great Mitch. Any idea which unit they will represent yet?

Fmethorst....

The guy is humming and harring about what he wants at the moment. For me, I would replicate them as Totenkopf for either konrad III or Fruhlingserwachen (spring awakening).

aujj65...

Thanks its always hard to know when to stop with white washed AFV's but, had some good references to follow this time so, it was a lot easier than just adding some here and there

Totenkopf's organic Tiger unit (9./SS-Pz.Reg.3) was never issued the Tiger II.

I had read somewhere that Totenkopf had lost Tiger II's during/after the failure of Konrad III before everything was regrouped for the next attack spring awakening??? The picture I posted with the tank also stated that they were Totenkopf tanks. I will have to have another look at this then

If you are refering to the picture in the other thread that Tiger II belongs to s.H.Pz.Abt.509. This unit was subordinated to IV.SS-Pz.Korps in mid January 1945 and did fight together with units of 3.SS-Pz.Div "Totenkopf". Perhaps this has led to some confusion in the picture caption. As noted earlier 9./SS-Pz.Reg.3 (9th company "Totenkopf") operated the Tiger I during this time.

This really only leaves one SS Tiger II unit, s.SS.Pz.Abt.501, operating in the area during this time. This unit was subordinated to "Leibstandarte" where it acted as II.Abteilung for SS-Pz.Reg.1.

Thanks for the info. The references I had in relation to this picture and about five more taken shortly after near somewhere called valencie or similar cannot quite remember at the moment were taken by Hans Cantzler SSTK purportedly of KTII from SSTK. What made me think this was something I read in a paper by Karl Ulrich who was formerly SSTK but, commanded Wiking as an oberfuhrer in these battles where he said, something similar to meeting some of his fellow brothers from TK in Tiger II's and that after the action these tanks were knocked out with some of his former comrades KIA.

I can use the info you supplied to inform the collector of his options should he wish to unit these two Tigers up. Very interesting talking with you about this

Regarding 9./SS-Pz.Reg.3 I will start January 7 1945 for brevity.

"07.01.45 - Operational tanks: 4

12.01.45 - The offensive to relieve BUDAPEST is suspended in the PILIS mountains; relocation to BERHIDA to the north-east of VESZPREM.

18.01.45 - Repetition of the relief offensive of the division in three Kampfgruppen under command of the IV SS-Panzerkorps towards BUDAPEST out of the KUNGOS sector to the north-east. SS-Panzerregiment "T" (9 Tigers) has Schwere Panzerabteilung 509 subordinated to it. After time consuming clearance of several passages through the minefields, SANDORKA is captured. Subsequently, defence against enemy tank attacks south of the hills of FELSUSOMLYO up to the road to SZABADBATTYAN..."

Previous excerpt taken from "Tigers in Combat II" (Wolfgang Schneider).

Regarding s.H.Pz.Abt.509 here is an excerpt from "Pz,Kpfw.VI Tiger Ausf.B, Konigstiger, Technical and Operational History"

"On Jan. 15 1945 the tanks were offloaded at Veszprem and began to move to Hajmasker. The unit was incorporated into IV SS-Pz.Korps. By Jan. 16 1945 all elements of the battalion had reached the concentration area. The following day, operating as an element of SS-Pz.Reg.3 (3-SS.Pz.Div "Totenkopf") its tanks began to move to the area south of Kungos where they participated in Operation Konrad 3..."

It carries on with a bit later with...

"On Jan. 21 1945 SS-Hstuf Leibel of the 3.SS-Pz.Div. "Totenkopf" arrived at the headquarters of s.H.Pz.Abt.509 with an order to immediately take over command of the battalion..."
