I would be curious to know how the Palio sets were distributed. Was it a common set...how many were made?

Check your new book (Volume III), as well as one of the K&C collector magazines, for both halves of the story of its distribution. In a nutshell, Andy was commissioned to make the set by an Italian couple, who went bankrupt shortly thereafter. The remainder of the sets they commissioned were sold through Toy Soldier & Model Figures Magazine as one of their "special offer" sets.

I agree with you that the painting is exceptional on the Pallio Standard Bearer set, but the sculpting is nothing out of the ordinary. I prefer the Les Mis set because both the sculpting and painting are superb.

The set was not designed to be sold with the Heraldry Tents, which were intended as accessories to Aeroart St. Petersburg Knights - Andy was and I believe still is the Far East Distributor for Thor's Aeroart figures. If you check the brochures from the mid-90's (I think 1995 or 1996) when the tents were advertised, they are depicted with Aeroart knights. There were only French, British and Scottish tents advertised initially (and a Chinese Imperial tent shortly thereafter) but K&C also sold a German Tent (which is also depicted in one of the Collector Magazines). I have the the three advertised european tents, and Larry Lo has the Chinese Imperial tent, but I have never seen the German tent in person.

Very informative as always...thank you! Looking forwad to the two new books.

Very nice addition there Lawrence, I would think that must be very rare :salute::

Cheers

Martyn:)

Martyn,

Thanks for the kind words. The set is somewhat rare as the papier mache burning building, which K&C made, sometimes was not purchased with the figures and so it is harder to find the two together. I had the burning building for over a year before I was able to get the figures. The wonderful part of this hobby is the generosity of two fellow friends & collectors, Hans & Steven, which enabled me to have the complete set in my collection.

From what I have seen, it looks like you have a few friends of your own :smile2:

All the best, Lawrence
