My son asked me yesterday, "how do soldiers shooting each other make the world better?"
I didn't know what to say. I thought about it for a bit, then I told him sometimes bad people want to hurt us, and soldiers, like his Great Uncle Joe, risk and sometimes give their lives to protect us. Without them, bad people would hurt us. That's why its important to remember Great Uncle Joe, Great Uncle John, Great Uncle Jack, and Great Uncle Leo (WWII Vets), Grampa, Great Uncle Dominick, Great Uncle Frank (Korean War Vets) and all the other soldiers who fought, and sometimes died, for us.
That little conversation with my son was, for me, what "lest we forget" really means.
