Lincoln...... (1 Viewer)

I'm sure there must be a point to this comic but it escapes me. However, I have to give credit to the illustrator for knowing who Salmon Chase is. That's quite an achievement in and of itself.

Well, I'm not a comic person so maybe that has something to do with that. However, I did find it amusing that someone actually liked Chase over Lincoln. Chase was rather inflexible and was a constant thorn in Lincoln's side, always scheming. In 1864, he was caught by Lincoln in an underhanded scheme to supplant him as Republican candidate, to Chase's embarassment. However, Lincoln, not being one to hold grudges, but also politically astute, got him out of the way after the election by appointing him Supreme Court Chief Justice.

Also the name "Salmon" is pretty funny.

The mechanics of "pantsing" would be difficult in the mid 1800s as men usually wore suspenders or "braces."

I seem to recall from the little I've read about Chase that he hated the name.

Yes, that's true. I remember in the Doris Kearns Goodwin book they both received a lot of attention.

"..Thank you, your order has been placed. .."

Thanks for reminding me. I've been meaning to read that book. I just ordered a copy.

It's a little hagiographic but very good. It won the Lincoln Prize. It has very good character portraits of Mary Lincoln, Seward, Stanton, Chase and Edward Bates (the attorney general). Sure you'll enjoy it.
