Thing is its all based on tradition and, thats always hard to change. I think the RF have moved, quite a way forward in the last few years and, a driving force behind that must be the queen herself. I am glad we have a monarchy and, the title of Scotts post says it all for me. Long may she reign.
As for Phillip I think many posit his as a wildcard and, an oaf but, having seen several docs where he speaks he seems as sharp as a pin. I wonder how well physically and mentally many who mock him will be doing when they are a similar age??? Nothing wrong in not suffering fools lightly or, speaking ones mind.

Totally agree. I think the first seeds of change were sown way back during the loss of Diana when the Queen came back to London to speak to the nation, despite our god awful press you could almost feel the change in feeling towards her as a mother and a grandmother, it was almost tangible. I think the fact that she has kept her dignity (whilst others in her extended family lost it in a big way)and her dedication to serving her country and commonwealth has kept her close to the hearts of millions. Prince Phillip has put his foot in it many times and is the subject of ridicule in some parts, however what is more important is that he is a rock for the Queen and has supported her all the way, she obviously leans on him a great deal.
I think the wedding of Kate and William has also breathed great life into the Royal family and there is a renewed feeling towards the monarchy, I think they will make a superb King and Queen when its eventually their turn. Going to be a good summer of celebrations this year, really looking forward to be up there for the thousand boat flotilla down the Thames.
And then there's the Olympics!!
