Long Tan Day
Whilst Col Joye and Little Pattie sang to the troops, Delta Company 6 RAR were engaged by a superior force in the rubber plantation outside Long Tan.
11 Platoon lost 10 men in the first 20 minutes of battle.
The company regrouped and formed a perimeter as wave after wave of the 3000 strong enemy assaulted the tenants of the 100 strong company.
Alpha Company and 3 Troop 1 APC Squadron were deployed to support the troops at dusk. They arrived as the enemy were in assault formation and decimated the attack wave.
During the battle a kiwi Artillery Officer calmly called in fire within 50m of the forward troops.
17 soldiers of 105 who left base were killed, and 21 wounded. Another soldier from the APC Troop was also killed.
245 enemy fallen were buried the next day by the Aussie troops.
One digger from 11 Platoon was found on the battlefield alive having spent the night alone amongst his fallen mates.
Long Tan is a Battle Honour of the Royal Australian Regiment.
Thank you to all who have served our country.
6 RAR enjoy your Battalions celebrations today.
We will remember them.

Good post and thread mate, a tribute to our fallen diggers and the diggers that survived that bloody battle.

The Task Force Commander ,,(,Brig Mc Donnell a former CO of 3 RAR) was criticized for not sending aid sooner to D Coy as Long Tan plantation was only approx 1000 clicks from the Dat.... Brig McDonnell reasoned it may have been a faint atk on the Task Force in order to draw forces out before a major atk on the Task Force area...which at the time had very weak perimters ... the defence's at that time were piss weak ....Maj Harry Smith (ex 9 Pl comdr...C Coy 2RAR Malaya 55/57 remarked after the Battle that he could not understand why Charlie did not bring down mortors onto his position during the Battle...Charlie had mortors ...he used them on the night of 17 Aug ....as a matter of interest 3000 arty rds ( Harrys words) were poured into Charlie from the Yanks 155 's and Aust 105's.... D Coy 6 RAR done Australia proud that afternoon/night of 18 Aug 1966....my two cents worth...TomB
