Lost interest in toy soldiers (1 Viewer)

Brad this is the only forum I am on. I find there is enough arguments on this one for me.

The thing about this lack of desire for me is that it's not being replaced with another version of the hobby. I have considered chucking it all and starting over with a few high end pieces. Every time I see some of the Russian pieces some of you collect I have a small desire to chuck it all, start over and only have a few amazing pieces. But I think that is just a pipe dream.

I am grateful for everyone's input and I guess we shall see if it's just a phase, Maybe it's my version of a midlife crisis:)

Chuck, since you’re an Audiophile I think you’d really enjoy the Steve Hoffman forum, https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/

There’s a lot of audio talk plus discussions of all kinds of music.

Hey Chuck, I think this has happened to most of us at some stage, some get back into the hobby, some don't. Since I joined this forum, about Three months after it started, I have stopped collecting TS several times, sold off a lot of my Sets, switched to other TS Themes or Theaters and even repurchased sets that I have previously sold and subsequently desired again. Now I mainly collect Aussie sets due to limited space and high costs, but also enjoy 'playing' with my early Collectors Showcase LAH Armour and K & C Waffen SS.

I became interested in military subject at a young age, I learned to read via my Brothers War Comics. I watched Waterloo at the Cinema in my first year of High School, which was a blockbuster movie back then, and I still watch it regularly, and also Zulu etc, etc. I guess I like any movies with firearms, tanks, weapons etc, including the John Wick franchise.

I also like Movies and Books based on; Military (of course), Hunting Books of previous Century, Science Fiction especially Military Space by Authors such as Neal Asher, Eric Nyland and William Dietz. Fantasy books, especially by J R R Tolkien. Also like Fishing, Hunting, Music of most types, and Debating with people, some call it Arguing but I beg to differ. Also into all types of Science be it Astronomy, Physics, Biology, whatever.

The thing is I've found it best to have a variety of interests, I try not to get too Passionate (Fanatical) about any one, just enjoy a variety of subjects.

Maybe just pack away your favourite sets and sell off the rest. See what happens after that, you may change your mind latter.

Thanks for response Matt. Great idea of packing and selling and I would always keep one cabinet. And I did make it sound like it the only thing I do.
It's not, I am a F1 fan for 30 years and most forms of auto racing, I've owned and driven a ton of classic cars since I first turned 15 ( no kidding I bought a 54 and a 47 at 15 and still own the 54). Hockey and boxing since I was kid. I used to collect original fight cards/posters.(Ali-Bomeya) I have done the book thing to a small level but when I down sized I got rid of most of it. I still read daily. I am a nut about movies. Its not oh no, toys soldiers is all I have. It's the, Oh No, the hobby that has the most emotional attachment has waned.

I liken it to this, I spent my summers on a family farm until I was 16 where I could walk off the porch and go shoot any day after the chores were done.
Come season we went as a family dad, uncles cousins, sometimes just us kids. I hunted small game every fall since I was 10. At 43 I was driving to meet friends at a local DNR park to hunt pheasant and I stopped at the first stop sign a block away, sat there for 5 minutes and drove home. Nothing happened but I never hunted again. I still target shoot. But for some reason I still don't understand I quit a huge part of what I consider my life and who I am as a person.

I wonder if this is the same.

Chuck

A variety of interests is always best. Every time I get bored with toy soldiers I simply enjoy one of my many other hobbies until I come back to collecting. Miniatures make everything more fun. Star Wars and other toys fed my interest in sci-fi and toy soldiers always make History more interesting to me.
I would enjoy collecting more if I could afford it and display it. As it is I'm taking a huge loss selling my condo but escaping from the sports bars and music venues in my town is worth a few hundred Gs.
I intend to move back into my parents' large house, play games and read about history. Not working. Don't intend to ever again. I'm selling my mint Camaro before I sell even my boxed toy soldiers, which should also go, so that gives one a clue to my priorities.
I'm just going to let the clock run on the rest of my life while I sit alone with my hobbies. They are all more fun now that I have the time!
The only valuable thing in life is time. Might as well cultivate hobbies to enjoy that time with!
Best wishes,

I started collecting 1/30 TS 10 years ago, and the last 1/30 item I bought was 6 years ago ^&grin , about the same time I've started to do plastic models in all scales...
The main reason I stopped collecting TS was the constant inscrease in price, and I had to stop somewhere. I'm still interested in TS and have started to collecting diecast in 1/32 scale mainly from Force of Valor..etc..And still visiting the forum to admire new released from TS manufacturer and collectors.

High cost of 1/30 TS is a huge factor for me because besides collecting TS, I also collect diecast planes, armors, 1/18 planes....AND I also a marine salt water lover. I currently keep a 90g salt water tank below with corals for relaxation :smile2: , so there is only so much money I could spend every month on all my hobbies ...

WOW that tank. That is a lot of time, money and work. Beautiful.

Sounds like you've got it all figured out.

Best of luck to you.

This sounds wonderful, but remember “a plan without a goal and a date is just a dream”{sm4}

That sounds wonderful -really?

He's a man who knows what he wants.

So he's got that going for him, which is nice.

I was going to ask about his vintage camaro; is is a 68/69/70 SS version with a frame off restoration, all factory gauges and such, but I haven't got the strength to pursue it.

That's similar to Bilbo and Frodo, they just wanted to chill, smoke their weed and let the world pass them by. Then that pesky Gandalf got them off their a$$ and on the road to adventures. Wizards are rare in Chicago but you do have a Camaro, why don't you do a road trip across America when the China Virus thing settles down. You have plenty of spare time and gas is cheap. An impossible dream for most people, but something you can do.

Was a 69. Sold today. Thanks for the advice, but I will take this path and sit right here until the end. The toy soldiers are with me{sm3}.
My point is that hobbies are fun, no matter what sort of life you lead.
Best wishes and stay safe

Ah I forgot to use .

Well how the Heck else can you respond to that? The man has a desire to go live in his parents basement at 43.

sounds wonderful at 63 not 43 🤔🤔🤔

What ever makes him happy I guess. I know there's plenty of younger guys at my work that wished they could afford to just stop work and chill out. They often ask me why I'm still working at 61 when I can afford to retire now. I wonder that myself sometimes, I guess I just like get out and about in the beautiful area I live in, and get paid for it.

I was lucky enough to drive from Chicago to Camp Pendleton and back in a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado convertible when I was young. It gave me a love for driving and my wife and I still take driving vacations on the great roads of America. It’s a beautiful country.

63? Good lord. That’s still ridiculously young. I counsel people on retirement finances for a living. If you’re in good health you better have a nice sized portfolio to live off SS and savings for 30+ years.

Also, my experience is that most people are better off, mentally, working for well longer than they might really need to. It’s good to be an engaged member of society and have a purpose. Being idle and untethered may sound wonderful, but it is not healthy imo. Unless the job is digging ditches or some other deeply unsatisfying role, work is good for the soul.
