I may have a chance to write something at work next year about dioramas in major national museums. It might also involve some arduous international travel to places like London so I am not happy{sm4}.

My question is this - if I could visit five major sites that house military dioramas (two of them would be Canberra's War Memorial and London's National Army Museum), what would some other options be?

Without a doubt Jack, go to Wellington NZ and visit the Great War Museum and see Peter Jackson's diorama's. If you have time, pop in and catch up with Toddy in Auckland as well.

OK , take some Tim-Tams and Vegemite go to ......................

Herat Military Museum Afghanistan.

Then the Istanbul Military museum...................

From there to the Musée de l’Armée in Paris.............

And finally to the Royal Green Jackets Museum in the U.K.................

Giving serious consideration.😁

Have you thought about the U.S. I don't know if there are museums with major dioramas but there may be. Perhaps you could contact the D Day Museum in New Orleans.

The project is one of those possibilities that may or may not go anywhere. In any case, the US would be a must. The Gettysburg diorama promotes itself as the largest military diorama in the country and given the iconic status of the battle it would be a must. I suppose if I could find a Revolutionary War Dio and an ACW in the US, Agincourt in the UK (I think that there is a big one in Leeds that has just be moved), Waterloo in the UK (National Army Museum and Green Jackets) I would then just need a diorama from each of the ancient world, WW2 and post-1945. It would seem that there are some awesome dioramas in Eastern Europe from WW2. That would leave Australia and NZ for the WW1 dioramas. That would be a bit of a spread in periods if not in countries.

I completely forgot about the Cyclorama at Gettysburg. I think they moved into new quarters for the sesquicentennial. I saw it as a kid and was floored. Remains an indelible memory.

If I go ahead with the project next year, I would need to interview the curators so it can then start to become increasing complex but the beauty of history buffs is they love to talk.

I will look into that one, many thanks.

There isn't much to see in terms of dioramas at the CWM. They have a few, such as an Iroquois village, the American invasion of Quebec 1775, and crossing the Canal du Nord in 1918, but that is about it. However, the museum is certainly worth a visit.

Cheers,

Brendan
