I have the utmost respect for Brad and George when it comes to baseball thoughts and opinions.

Unfortunately baseball’s economics have made business, market size and money as important as player stats and skills.

I saw an online article about the top 10 remaining free agents and who's the favorite to sign them.............it was basically Yankees/Mets/Dodgers..........

The next time I see "Kansas City/Pittsburg/Tampa Bay/Minnesota/Cincinatti/Colorado is in the hunt for free agent X" will be the first time.

It's become a league of the have's and have nots financially/who gets the best players.

Of the top 10 remaining free agents, the Mets only sign two of them and that’s because it’s their players, Manaea and Alonso. They will not sign any non Mets, especially pitchers. Stearns doesn’t believe in paying big money for pitchers.

All of the above teams are owned by wealthy owners so they have the capability to sign FAs. KC signed Seth Lugo to a three year $45 million contract last year so they have the capability.

Running a franchise has always been a business so why shouldn’t the above be factors?

It wasn't a business for George Steinbrenner, all he cared about was winning, it wasn't a business with the RS ownership from 2004 through 2018, it was all about winning a WS title, now all the RS management cares about is the bottom line, winning be ****ed.

The business still has to break even; you can’t run it a deficit. In the early years, he didn’t always make a profit or sometimes break even but he saw the future in extracting money from TV and radio rights and made a lot of money from those deals, which he then translated into even more money when he started the YES Network.

If you don’t take care of the bottom line, you won’t have a business.

Having the capability and actual spending are two different things; the RS ownership owns the team, much of the land around the ballpark, Liverpool, the Penguins and they're involved in auto racing too...........tons of money, but not willing to spend. And yes, all of these owners have massive amounts of personal wealth or they would not own teams, so yes, to your point, mostly all teams are owned by wealthy owners.

The NL is now loaded; Dodgers, Mets, Braves, Phillies, the AL is a clownshow, now is the time to spend if you own the RS, a path to the WS is wide open, it's the Yankees, Indians, LET'S GO O'S!! (how many guys have they lost this off season; so much for new owners spending like mad), Tigers, Royals, Guardians, Astros, none of those teams stands head and shoulders above all others.

MLB’s lack of a salary cap makes the business side more of a simple advantage than an actual strategic factor.

Again, I’m not knocking it as the Giants have benefited from the current system.

When I think of all the great players I have seen in 60+ years and then see players who I've never even heard of making millions it makes me sick. I think it will hurt MLB in the long run.

I saw where the left fielder the RS were in the running to sign has resigned with the Dodgers, 3 years/66 million, Tescar/Tesla/Test Car/Tostinos/whatever his name is..............26 million dollar signing bonus, 26 million of it deferred, so he counts as 3 years/.67 cents towards their actual salary number.

Way to go Dodgers.

To Brad's point about small market teams being in the running; Burnes to the Diamondbacks, 6 years/210.00 million, 35 million a year, player opt out in two years.

If I'm a LET'S GO O'S! fan, I'd be pissed, that's not a lot of money at all, although the rumor is Burnes only wanted to sign for the Dodgers (naturally), Padres or Diamondbacks.

The NL is so loaded, the AL is a clownshow now.

Beyond baseball these deferred payments continue to create an unfair burden on everyday California residents.

There was a bill in the California senate that proposed a limit on deferments but it was stalled via lobbying efforts.

what a shock.

Please keep in mind I am a Giants fan. However, I don’t want to pay more taxes so they can pay millionaire athletes.

This is a red herring. The Dodgers deferred money liability is approximately 1 billion. The highest tax rate in California is approximately 12% which translates into 120 million. Obviously that would not be paid all at once because if it wasn’t deferred it would be paid over the course of the contract.

However, for arguments sake, let’s say the amount had to be paid at once. In 2023 state tax revenues were 220 billion. 120 million is a drop in the bucket. Now, in 2025, before federal monies are paid, California will have a budget that far exceeds revenues. 120 million will help but in a very minor way.

The deferred money question makes for good headlines but in reality it’s insignificant.

California is a disaster. One of the wealthiest places in the history of the world with enormous taxes and still they are broke. Even running an enormous deficit. I think your only hope in that regard is to move. My dad lives in TN where they have no state income tax and they are running a surplus. Awash in money.

I live in California and Texas and while I can’t say I agree with everything that the Texas government does, fiscally they are miles (dollars) ahead of the “golden state”. There is no state income tax in Texas.

I would not be surprised if some of those MLB players that defer their money end up in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston etc.
