Sudan expert Col. Mike Snook on the Victorian Wars forum mentioned that Wolseley chose grey uniforms for the British forces during the Ashanti Wars of the 1870s and this may have served as a precedent for the Sudan. Mike has suggested a link to Wolseley's admiration in the 1860s for the Confederacy and its leaders whom he met with during the Civil War as referenced in a book on Wolesely and the American Civil War quoted below with example of Ashanti War uniform.
