Mountford Metal Miniatures Battery Elephant Transport Set (4 Viewers)

Hi Guys,

My name is Dave Love, I run Mountford Metal Miniatures Ltd. I would like to clarify my position regarding recent posting on this site. First of all I am responsible for originating and producing the elephant, Mahout, 4.7" gun and limber kit of parts that this chap is making such a great job off putting together and finishing off. This kit was originally sold as part of the Victorian / Colonial kits section of my company which I sold out as a going concern in 2006 but this does look like an original kit that was purchased from us a long time ago and I am pretty sure they will be our original castings.

In 2008 I also sold the modern guns and figures section of my business to a company in Australia and they have been producing parts from my old tools etc. I just want to make it clear that I have no control over whatever is produced by any other company and although I do not mind kits going out known as "Mountford guns" I do not want any one to think I produced the castings for them. I do intend to get back into the artillery and figures business and hope that very soon you will be able to see some quite interesting new products, which I do not want to get confused with our old kits being produced elsewhere.

Thats all really, thanks for listening and I hope this is clear.

Hi Dave,
This elephant artillery set that I asked Jeff to paint for my collection is indeed a set you produced some years ago and that I was lucky to find recently.
As mentioned by Jeff in his posts, quality of these castings is just perfect !
I hope you will continue to propose us such great sets in the future !
Cheers,
Michel

Undercoated in grey primer and hitched up awaiting painting. to be continued...........

Jeff

Really nicely done! It looks great with just the undercoat, can't wait to see the finished product!

Started painting the elephant, well actually the harness and stuff.

The Yoke (?) is dark brown then the cover/cloth is an orangey-brown mixture. Sorry about the descriptions but I'm technically challenged regarding the correct terminology of elephants attire!

The harness is just tan straight from the tin. The quilted jacket will be next.

Jeff

Btw, this is just me but I find it easier to paint up to a raised area than away from it, also leaving the main colour to last on a large item such as the elephant enables me to hold an unpainted part so I don’t get oily fingers on previously painted areas.

Quilted jacket was painted in a khaki colour mixed from tan, buff and green :))) and then dark brown was added for a darker shade to make the pattern stand out.

Jeff,
What a great tip for painting! I always started big and ended small, and got a lot of fingerprints and smudges in the process. I will certainly try this method for the next project.
That elephant is going to be a masterpiece!

Well I don't know about that Mike!

But one thing is for sure - there seems to be a distinct lack of elephant jokes so far  Simon must be slipping (or sleeping) :D

Thanks :)

I think I may try your method as well Jeff. I have a couple of horses with bridles to paint, so I will see how it goes :)

Something else I do - dark colours, reds, blues etc, usually require two coats of paint, first coat is block painted and then the raised detail such as harness/straps/belts added on top. Any touching up can be achieved when (using a small size brush 000) the second coat of main colour is painted, cutting in and upto the raised detail which acts as a guide for the tip of the brush.

I'm sure there are better methods, but this seems to work for me.

Thanks

How do you know if an elephant has been in your fridge?

Looking good as usual. Always wanted to be able to mix that khaki colour - now I realise why I was never able to do so.:D
