On the 22nd January 1879 , prior to the famed defence of Rorke's Drift, a little blunder occurred to British forces invading Zululand... Isandlwana. Brevet Major Francis Russell of the Royal Artillery followed Col. Durnford out from camp to, in their minds, rescue General Lord Chelmsford. About 8 miles from the camp, Durnford and his mounted troops had left Russell and his rocket battery in the dust. A Zulu skirming section from the Mkanakobosicut around Durnford and found Russell. Russell fired off one rocket ,was shot and killed and the rest retired with a NNC company under Captain Nouse.
This is the painted Hales Rocket Battery set firing a 9pd rocket. Mike
Jeepers! I forgot to show what they were firing at! Apologies given. Mike
