Dear All
In February the Thomas Gunn team visited Gerry McCallister, the founder of Mr McAllister’s Amazing Toy Soldier Emporium in Modbury.

The shop showcases an outstanding collection of veteran William Britain collectibles, model figures, military ephemera and other vintage pieces, including Mignot and Elastolin making it a top destination for serious collectors.

We are pleased to announce Gerry will soon be an official dealer of Thomas Gunn products.

Gerry's shop is located in the picturesque village of Modbury, a real delight to visit with lots of events going on throughout the year.
The address for those of you wishing to visit is: 5 Church street, Modbury
PL21 0QW.

His email is: gerry.mcallister@outlook.com
Tel 07957 597 217

Below are some photos of his shop and of Gerry himself, the shop is a real labour of love and well worth a visit if you are in the area. Gerry has set it up with great care, it will appeal to collectors of all ages.

Thomas Gunn looks forward to partnering with Gerry in this exciting new venture.

Modbury is in Devon in the UK, NZ Gary lives quite close to there.
40 minutes drive from my house Contacted Gerry and hopefully visiting in a couple of weeks. It's a beautiful small medieval town in the heart of God's own country nesting in the South Hams.

Never knew it existed but thanks to TG I am on my way! And a pub right opposite the shop- what could be better.

Gary

It was Friday. I work a nine day fortnight so it was my non working day. Always a blessed relief from the daily grind of working. A more civilized start to the day with a lie in encouraged by with a mug of tea propped up on pillows next to my wife.

Then came the least enthralling part of my day and a trip to the dentist for the four monthly hygienist polish. To soften the blow my wife and I retread after my ordeal to a favorite café above an art centre in the small market town on Bovey Tracey on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. The place was packed but we found the one free table and settled down to hot cappuccinos and warm cheese scones with Cornish salted butter. Dogs seemed in vogue that day and we counted at least six amongst the patrons - which gave the place a slightly unpleasant wet dog aroma as expectant eyes gazed up at us every time we walked past a canine companion.

It was soon time for the main event, after we had dived into the local bakery to grab a freshly baked loaf of bread. We were off to the village of Modbury and Mr McAllister's Amazing Toy Soldier Emporium. Nestled in the South Devon countryside between granite strewn wild moorlands and golden sandy beaches where rolling green hills are the backdrop to this small collection of local shops and old Devon houses. It was a 40 minute rain soaked drive along the Devon Express Way duel carriageway, there are no motorways this far west. Our little blue car then meandered its way through high hedged lanes emerging onto the main street and convenient parking at the local doctors surgery.

A five minute walk and I was at Gerry McAllister's shop. I was the only patron and Gerry was reclining behind his counter, feet up contemplating the treasures in his shop. He gave me a tour which included cabinets full of William Britain sets old and new, Imperial Productions (from my old stomping ground of Greytown New Zealand), French makes Mignot and many others. I decided to get a box of Spanish Napoleonic Mignot figures from I am guessing the 1930's. Gerry is also fixing up some damaged figures from the same manufacturer ready for a return visit. Gerry only takes cash but a quick visit to an ATM in the village soon enabled the sale to take place.

What a find! And while I am mainly a matte collector I do have a reasonable amount of the old school glossy type of toy soldiers. So I have vowed to return, cash in hand to pick up those repaired figures and maybe another box of those Mignot figures..

My wife and I retired to a local Italian bakery for a late brunch of tea with poached eggs and avocado on toasted ciabatta. We also found a butchers were homemade sausages and Devon lamb shops were purchased. After driving the 50 miles home, and after a spot of gardening we sank into a good bottle of Aussie red, those lamb shops accompanied by a Greek salad and that crusty bread from the Bovey Tracey bakers.

So so ended the day I visited probably the only true toy soldier shop left in England. If only all Fridays could be like this one.
