My ACW Battlefield (1 Viewer)

Wow, it's really impressive to see everything out there on the field. The Hudson and Allen display board was a great investment. It makes it all look that much more real.

here's another photo showing the farm house yard turned into a Union aide station and staff HQ . . .

Mike,
I like this set up a lot, sort of reminds me of the Federal aide station/Meade's HQ as depicted in the Gettysburg cyclorama.

A coupe of questions if you don't mind; how large is this layout and can you eventually expand it if you wanted to? Also, have you ever counted as to how many figures you've got in your collection and lastly, this is quite a layout, how long did it take for you to set all of this up?

Again, great job...............

Its been uncomfortably (and unseasonably) hot and humid here in south central Wisconsin these past two days so I have been staying low and cool inside. This has given me some time to rearrange the moveable scenics on my 4'x8' "play table" and create a different visual perspective than what I am used to. Here are a few photos of most of my ACW collection displayed on the new arrangement. No particular historic reference . . . . however with a little imagination you can almost visualize Gettysburg, perhaps a segment of Pickett's Charge. Diorama base by Hudson & Allen, scenics by H&A, WB, and JG Miniatures. The majority of the figures are WB, mixed in with First Legion, Don Troiani Minatures, ONTC, and early Conte. The common thread between the WB, DTM, ONTC, and Conte figures is that they were all sculpted by Ken Osen. The First Legion figures are a perfect match (size wise) and blend in very nicely with all the other figures. I usually post in the WB or FL forums but since I am using figures from five different manufacturers I decided to post these here. These are the first few . . . I plan to keep this thread active for the next couple of days with newer photos as I take them.

HOLY CRAP! That's BIG!

Nice job.

Mike,
Very nice, I always enjoy seeing your battlefield.
Brian

Thank you very much Brian . . . Great hearing from you.

Beautiful collection Mike. One to be proud of.
Mark

Thanks MArk.

Beautiful Set up !

Glad you like it Alex . . . Still waiting on you to do one of your most excellent set-ups ACW style.

Wow Mike! What a great presentation of an amazing collection. Been well worth waiting for your latest postings. The scenics are well presented with a swirling array of action. Chris

Chris I had to do something after all the wonderful looking dios you have been posting lately.

Good to see you spending some time inside and out of the heat Mike. Your collection is impressive and all of the figures work very well together. Your placement reminds me of a cyclorama painting!

I hope to finally build something for myself now that the Miller's cornfield set is coming out... I am sure we will see a similar set up from you this Fall too. I hope to see you at the Wisconsin Veteran's Museum event in September.
All the best,
Ken

Ken, without your hand in this dio it wouldn't even be close to the nice presentation it is. Wasn't so many of the large battles of the ACW presented as cycloramic so I thought why not try it. I'll see you for sure at the Chicago show (Friday only) and I wouldn't miss the WVM event at all. See you and Ericka soon.

What a war you've got going on there Mike

Blimey! what with your's and George's magnificent collections on display here on this board I'm in ACW heaven.

Great set-up Mike and very succinctly constructed/placements.

However, it appears to me as if very shortly you are going to have to double the size of your battlefield otherwise you aint going to have room for those 13th Alabama boys^&grin

Bob

Thanks Bob, coming from a master of the ACW diorama such as yourself, your kind comments mean alot to me. The nice thing about my diorama is that it is expandable if I would need to make room for more figures like the new 13th Alabama . . . . . would have to build a bigger table to put it on though.

Goodness me, another beautiful ACW dio! Well done Mike, your dio is outstanding!

Tom

Thanks Tom.

What else can you say but.....brilliant......:salute::
Wayne.

Thnaks Wayne.

Great collection and pictures , Mike. I can almost smell the gunpowder !
Kirk

Kirk, there have been times here that I thought I smelled the gunpowder myself.

Mike, what a nice setup you have there - a fine investment in figures, terrain and fun for sure! ^&cool ^&cool ^&cool

Jeff

Thanks Jeff . . . it is a great way to stay COOL when it so hot outside.

Thanks again George. The table that the diorama is on is 4-feet x 8-feet. On it I have 8 individual diorama squares, each 22-inches x 22-inches. When joined together they make a diorama that is 44-inches wide by 88 inches long whcih fit nicely on top of the table. I can use each square independently, or grouped differently to some extent depending on terrain elevation of abutting pieces. So my arrangements could be many variants. As far as figure count goes I have a pretty accurate number . . . a BUNCH. I have never really counted them all, it would take to long and I would run out of fingers andd toes. I spent a good part of Monday ssetting this one up.

Nicely staged and photgraph Mike......Joe

Thanks Joe.

HOLY CRAP! That's BIG!

Nice job.

Carlos

My wife has told me that before :wink2:. Thnaks Carlos.

Mike...I just found this thread...that is probably the best diorama you have done to date...I'm a sucker for those epic battle scenes...the action on your table looks hot and heavy...all your work...all your collecting...all your enthusiasm...it's really paying off in these pics...the is a very busy scene with lots to llok at...

"2 thumbs and 1 toe up" for you!!!

MAJOR KUDOS!!!

Mike, I'm sorry to have missed this thread since I was on vacation last week. What an amazing set up you have here! The entire diorama is one fluid and dynamic scene, and you have done a great job making it all work together. Got to love the H & A bases you have and the versitilty they provide. I'm a little jealous about that.....^&grin

Also, the Britains and the First Legion figures really do work well together in a large set up like this. Again, great stuff!

Noah

What a great set-up Mike. Your collection certainly has grown !! Thanks for sharing your playtime with us. Superb as ever.

Thanks Mike for the pictures of your diorama table. Very inspiring and nice work. I could spend the hot day with your diorama. I like Meade's HQ. John

Very nice Mike. That is truly a wonderful setup you have there.

Hello Mike,
I only today discovered your diorama on the forum!
Collection grandiose display of all actors and scenery beautiful!{eek3}{eek3}{eek3}
How many "participants" ..... pedestrians, riders??
I'd like to have as many pieces to recreate the mass effect of a battle (Napoleon)-like screen.
Looking at this picture, we guess the mood of the battle (the noise, the smell of gunpowder .....)
Good job and thank you for posting.
