I am doing a presentation to the Mid-coast Maine Historical Society next week.

The lecture is going to focus on two topics.
First is "Learning, Teaching and Preserving History through Toy Soldiers"
Second is "The American Revolution: Facts the Teacher Never Taught You; or Got Wrong"

I am going to be setting up a AWI diorama with many K&C AWI figures as well as some JJD Indians.
The presentation will utilize audio, video and .PPT slides.

Expected audience is about 55-60, but no one knows until the event.
I'll try to get a few photos.

BUT the good thing is .... I get a FREE DINNER!! {sm4}

the free dinner sounds good...^&grin...

but the lecture alone should be fun...

hope you have a receptive audience...

Best of luck Larry, break a leg as they say (well not really because I need you for the Valley Forge Show that weekend).................at least we'll have something to talk about on the way to PA...............:wink2:

Thanks Guys.
I just heard that the Director of Education at the General Henry Knox Museum is planning to attend. Part of my discussion is on Henry Knox .... so her attendence is interesting?

Larry,

Can't wait to hear about it when I see you at the VF show at the end of the month.

Good luck with your presentation. Wish I could be there.

Mark

Sounds great, Larry.
All the best for it!
I hope it will be a rewarding endeavor for you.

You should bring some of your homemade wigwams. After all, American history begins well before the AWI.

Very RIGHT!

Actually, yes the Wigwams are part of the display I am planning. I want to show a bit more "peaceful" display rather than a battle. That will be more focused towards FIW with the JJD RSF Indians and French Traders.

However, the AWI display will be a redoubt with K&C Militia and Backswoodsmen fending off Hessian troops, 42nd Highlanders and Lt. Light Dragoons.

I am only allowed a small (card table) size space, as a display area, so my T.S. selection is somewhat limited.

I'll endeavor to grab a few shots, if time and schedule permits. Thanks Go for Broke

Good idea; two or three shots of vodka should do it..................

Ya' a good idea, but I think I'll wait for a couple days until I'm in the booth at the MFCA show.

[GEORGE] Larry, get the K&C WS274 box
[LARRY] Huh? WS is for what?
[GEORGE] No, 274
[LARRY] Where is it?
[GEORGE] In the big K&C box under the table.
[LARRY] Which table? I see 100's of tables everywhere?
[GEORGE] OUR TABLES, right there!!!!
[LARRY] Oh ya' that box, got it. What was the number again?
[GEORGE] 274! 274! Got it?
[LARRY] Yep got it 274. BUT FIRST I gotta pee!

(over the loud speaker)

.... Clean up in aisle 4, clean up in aisle 4, dead body in the Minutemen booth aisle 4 .....

Followup:

The AWI lecture went off without a hitch, despite the rather inclement weather here in Waldoboro on that day.

We had 38 visitors PLUS 14 members of the Historical Society attend the talk.

The first presentation was on Learning, Teaching and Preserving History through Toy Soldiers.
The talk went very well with a LOT of questions and interest. The second part was a Jeopardy game with little know facts on the AWI. Since there were so many questions we only got about half way through before time ran out.

Many of the folks brought toy soldiers that they possess, either from a Dad, Husband or their own childhood for me to identify.
I did fairly well in identification, but didn't know to much about some of them.

I will post some photos and maybe some of you guys can give me a bit-o-help.

After these I will post some of the pictures of the displays that I set up.

One woman brought in a big box of (Barclay or Manoil). I don't know what the difference is between them.
However, included was this Female Farmer.

Here is another shot of a Machine Gunner. Hollow Cast

There was also a set of these Tin / Flat soldiers ...

Any thoughts on these?

MANY THANKS

Here is another shot of a Machine Gunner. Hollow Cast

Hi, Larry, glad to hear that your talk went well!

That machine gunner is from Manoil, Nr. 23 "Machine Gunner Sitting" in their catalog, but collectors have identified three variants, that O'Brien referred to as M39, M40 and M41, as follows:

"M39, seated on four pillows (sic), bullets feed from ammo box" (I suspect those are sandbags, not pillows.)
"M40, markings under base"
"M41, squarer-looking, markings near right leg"

I can't quite tell from the photo, but it looks like that one is the first variant.

Prost!

Many Thanks, Brad,
I'll post some more tomorrow on (??) Russian made Napoleonic figures.

Good Evening Brad,
A quick question if I may.

On the bottom of the Marx, tin figures there are numbers that seem to all be multiples of "5". (The ones here have 5, 10, 15, 25, 45, etc)
Thanks to your hint on what they are, I found a good quantity on EBay that exhibit the same system.

Do you now what the numbers mean? ..^&confuse If anything ....
Much appreciated in advance.

--- LaRRY

***** UPDATE: After a bit of hunting they appear to be part of a "Target Set" that when you ... Shoot Them ... your would get that number of points.
Seems they were called "Soldiers of Fortune"
