My family and I are in the middle of a 7-day trip to Historic Williamsburg, Virginia. While my wife and daughter have been mostly enjoying Busch Gardens and the adjacent water park, my son and I did a guided tour of the Civil War Battle of Williamsburg from McClellan's Peninsular Campaign, toured the original Virginia Capital Building and the Governor's Palace. You had to see the weapons on display in the Governor's entrance foyer to believe them! On Friday my whole family is going to a range to shoot Civil War percussion cap rifles and Revolutionary War flintlock muskets. I will definitely post some photos of the black-powder firing party!

Very cool Louis. I wonder what the recoil is like on a musket? Plus the length and weight of it. The East Coast has so much history.

I will let you know my thoughts on this subject Friday. I can compare it to my experiences firing an M1 Garand and an AR15, it that will help.

I'd love to see more pics from Williamsburg, that is one place I remember visiting many years (37?) ago when I toured in the US.

Loved seeing the old buildings and the history just all around,

John

John,

I’ll post some more when I get back the hotel.

As John requested, here are some photos of the old Virginia Capital Building . . .

Sounds and looks like you're all having a great trip Louis. Williamsburg looks an interesting place to visit and the Musket firing sounds like great fun too !

One of my favorite places to visit beginning when I was 11 yrs old. I've read a number of books on the restoration process. Unfortunately the Williamsburg Foundation is in severe financial difficulty. Hard to compete with all the theme parks with the younger generations I guess. Hopefully they will be able to turn it around. Chris

I have to tell you the Historical Society seems to have advanced with the times. They have several 4 and one 5-star resorts, which are fully booked this week, a 5-star spa, which is fully booked all week, and several highly rated restaurants, all of which are fully booked this week. I can’t speak to the rest of the year, but during my visit they have been more than holding their own.

Thanks Louis, good to hear. I was referring to articles I've read in the last yr which report financial losses and operating at a deficit, revenues not meeting expenses. The Foundation has had to make cuts in staff and other areas.

Glad you and family are having a good trip. One of my favorite places. Chris

Looks like you are having a great family trip!
I always loved Williamsburg, and visited many times when I was stationed at Langley. If you have the time I would recommend visiting Fort Monroe in Hampton.
Visit | Fort Monroe Authority

Also the Mariner's Museum in Newport News.
The Mariners' Museum and Park - America's National Maritime Museum (marinersmuseum.org)

VA Air & Space Center,Hampton
Exhibits - Virginia Air & Space Center (vasc.org)

And of course Jamestown and Yorktown.

If you like seafood I always enjoyed eating at the Whaling Company restaurant in Williamsburg
