Lt., those calvary guys look great. Its ok, you don't have to rush back to the shiney stuff. They look great matte or glossy, its all in the detail, and you have that. Mike

Keeping the Kilted Vampire happy and not to upset him here are figures I've painted from kits by New Hope Design and yes K.C. they're Zulus and Modwall I'll get back to posting additional matte photos....The Lt.

Time to add a 54mm ZW figure of my own. It's a kit from laststand miniatures.
It needed some cleanup work but paints up nicely. I have another one awaiting paint.
I am in doubt if I should paint the eyes or not, and the base will need some more work to create depth. Comments are very welcome.

Excellent paint job Joachim as an artist it refects it. What did you use to paint the figures and does last stand have a web site? If you decide to paint the eyes you don't want to show the whites in them and looking forward to seeing more of your finished work......The Lt.

Thanks Lt. www.laststandminiatures.co.uk The website isn't updated for ages but Chris the owner told me the zulus are on the way. they sell them glossy at fair prices and as castings. I also bought a rocketbattery from them, which is from Mountford. That one needs a lot of work but looks outstanding.

I prime my figs with matte white enamel and use Vallejo acrylics afterwards. Instead of applying washes, I apply paint mixed with water and matte varnish. The wash is way better to control this way and gives the raised areas a nice patina as well. A retarder can be mixed to prevent the paint from drying fast but I rarely use it on figures.

I flock the base with sand sprinkled in white glue and paint it.

Updates;
The loincloth is made in leopard skin now and the base has some green on it.
The look i am going for with these figures is matte toy soldier style. In the future i will buy some better detailed models (although these are excellent models) with more detail to paint.

About the detail on figures; this is a pic of a model i would like to buy and paint this way but some exercise is required
As you can see, the soldier's kit has much more detail than most castings/figures have. That's what separates the model figure from the toy soldier. I can enjoy glossy or matte toy soldier styles just as much as this BTW.
Anyway, a figure like this hasn't got any limitations detail wise. These are 54mm white metal http://www.ttfxmedia.com/beneito/

Hey Lt., You are up early! I ordered a French Napoleonic Officer from a russian company and I finally got it. I will be attempting a conosuier paint style with this guy. A test of my skills if you will.

They say the early bird catches the worms but as my luck will have it seems like it's all I've been catching. Glad to hear that you've decided to stop resting on your well deserved laurels of achievements and will be looking forward to the finished figure apound it's completion. In the mean time guess I'v got to cover for you and yes their glossy. The following are figures from Tradition Kits of the Zulu married and unmarried regiments and quite nicely sculpted aand also available as part of their Toy Soldier Gloosy Series. I decided to use a larger shield provided by Hinchliffe for all but two of their figures.......The Lt.
