My RAAF Spit's lobbed up at my door last week and to say that I'm over the moon about them would be an understatement! They are beautiful aircraft and the detail, paintwork, decals and weathering is awesome to say the least! Thanks John for making them as they have a special significance for me being that this squadron (457 squadron) was based in Darwin for a period during World War Two.
I have already posted this in another thread but this squadron operated from an airfield in Batchelor just south of Darwin from the 20th of January 1943. It wasn't uncommon for aircraft to use other airstrips during the bombing of Darwin campaign by the Japanese. The Australian military built quite a few airstrips just outside of Darwin as the main aerodrome in the town was being heavily bombed. These airstrips still exist and they are located on the Stuart Highway which is the main highway that connects Darwin to other parts of Australia. One of these airstrips is only 5 minutes drive from my house and it's possible that the real Spit's that these models represent used this airstrip during WW2.
Here are some pic's of my new acquisitions. Some day i'll do a Darwin remote airstrip dio with the Spit's as the centrepiece.
