I recently began construction on a new diorama table for my hobby room. This table is replacing a smaller table I had that just wasn't big enough. I designed it so it's easy to change scenes whenever I want. It is basically an 80 x 30 inch hollow core door that I trimmed out in maple. I would have normally used oak, but the maple was already in the shop. The legs are from Ikea because it's easier and cheaper to buy them then to make them myself. The door is great because they are available in different widths, and are very strong and light. The table lifts off the legs and the legs fold flat if I need to move or store it in the future. Since my toy soldier room is on the second floor that helps on the stairs and my back.
I left the edge trim about a quarter inch proud of the top so the trim would align and hold my MDF panels in place. I may have stolen the idea for the removable panels from Mike Estell. I made four panels each 30 x 20 inches. Finding good grass is hardest part of the project.
I ended up using brown wookie fur from a fabric store. It's easy to trim and covers the figure bases nicely. This picture shows one panel covered with my grass. It only has one shade of green applied to it. The actual color is much closer to grass than in the picture. I'll be adding color as the project progresses.
