NAP0030 Napoleon & Staff and NAP0030a Guard Chasseur Pre-order! (2 Viewers)

I just noticed that General Cambronne now has two figures of himself. One in the staff set and then another in the Guard Chasseurs series. I think it is the same body with different arms. Cool, :) I can order two of the Guard Chasseurs figure and add the second one to my staff set as an extra general.

I thank you Matt, but my wallet is not so sure.

I take it you're kidding about the same body/different arms comment?????

No, not the same at all - not even by the same sculptor. The Staff Set was actually sculpted over 3 years ago for my partners personal collection (he wanted it so he hired a sculptor to sculpt it for him just for his own collection - a collection by the way that is a Napoleonic toy soldier collector's wet dream to behold!). The Cambronne from the Guard Chasseurs release is an entirely brand new figure by one of our primary Napoleonics sculptors. It is just coincidence that Cambronne is included in both releases.

Matt, I apologize I miss spoke when I said they were sharing the same body. I had only the quick looked at the pictures shown on the forum. I just assumed that First legion would do what so many other Soldier companies do. It would have been fine to have a different looking figure sharing the same body with different arm. Having two totally different figure is all the better.

How many sculptors does First Legion employ? It amazes me that there are that many people in the world who can sculpt figures that well and they all seem to work for you.

I can hardly wait to see these guys in person.

No worries at all. We obviously do a bit of this for our rank and file to provide as much variation as possible, but never with a personality figure or the like.

In terms of the number of sculptors, only a few, but they do it full time for us. Suffice it to say that talented sculptors can be a "different" lot and can often be challenging to work with and after several years and trying many different sculptors out we finally have exactly who we want doing exactly what we want. There are some talented folks out there but finding them is one thing, getting consistently superb quality work on a consistent basis is something else entirely.

Was "playing" with the new toys today. This quick image shows one of each of the 22 sets in this release displayed with a broken cannon (for the desperation effect!). End of Waterloo 1815......

I'm having trouble deciding what diorama to use these figures for as there are a lot more options for them than I initially thought. I was going to do a square, but now Noah has me thinking Guard Chasseurs vs. British Guards is the way to go....decisions decisions....................

Matt,

Great layout !!

I would like to see First Legion sell a 10" x 10" or 10" x 20" ground work base like the one you are using in your photo. The size is open to whatever. :) I would like something that would fit on a shelf. I like how the ground work matches the ground work done on the figure's base.

Do you see this happening in Frist Legion's future plans?

Yes, versus the British Guards would be great. They are most impressive in that formation. You didn't break one of your cannons to get this shoot did you?

Of course we are "patiently" waiting for some mounted British Guards to help drive them off.;):D

I think a better idea would be a pack of say 20 squares (same size as the figures) and done in the same terrain. That way they can be placed beside the figures and would help to disguise the bases.

Interesting idea BF but I am afraid that would still leave the lines between the bases. To the extent you are worried about the bases, I think you need to cover them with loose ground cover, like that from Hudson & Allen, or taller grass, like the new mats from B-a-R. If you are not, then the requested 10 or 12 by 20 bases would be fine.

I agree that the bases would still show and that H7A would be the best to cover it up. My suggestion was more for keeping everything on one level.

The problem as I see it with have just extra empty squares with the ground work is that it would limit you to arranging your figures to being square to square. While this is OK for marching lines this would not be suitable for the sets like the artillery, French staff or Russian staff.

That is a good point King's Man and one which I never thought of.

Actually now that you mention it, that would not work at all for even minor desired variations in the direction of facing for anything except perhaps the most rigid of marching formations.

Always a problem but some loose scatter covers most problems,it all depends if you want a permanant fixture or one you can change.with most my figures and dio's i'm never really satisfied so dont go for the permanent option, theres always something you think will look better.some scatter foilage does the trick, not that ive done that on the dio pics ive posted.

Thanks. Yes, this is something we will probably add at some point in the not too distant future. I think 10" x 20", 10" x 10", and even 20" x 20" (allowing for larger features to be built such as hills, etc...) would be interesting if done in a modular format. They would use the same colors as our bases and the same exact grass. There seems to be a level of demand for it as both you and Andanna and a few others by email have asked us to create such display boards. We could also offer various ground covers of the same material loose in bags to use to cover the edges of the bases if desired (something that doesn't bother me at all).

Another item added to the "to do" list....:D

Matt

Dealing with small extra squares like that would be an exercise in tedium. :D

I didn't "break" it exactly, just disassembled it. :D This particular cannon has been on more continents (3) and been involved in more battles than any real cannon of the Napoleonic wars!!! Perhaps I should create small diorama monument with it as a testimony to my tiny wars. :D

The "Anglophiles" amongst you must remember that we did just release 17 different british guards and a British 9lb Foot Artillery Set! Patience is indeed a virtue my friend. It's all coming in good time.........
