A now for something completely different for our flagship series, Napoleon's Europe.........….First Legion presents the Old Guard Dutch Grenadiers Tete de Colonne! The band, or Tete de Colonne (literally translated "head of the column") would lead the regiment during parades or other important occasions such as review by the Emperor. They rarely served in combat, though were present and often assisted with the wounded or other non-combat battlefield tasks. We have presented them here with such that you can setup a full band including the Drum Major, Band Master, Jingling-Johnny, and the various woodwind, percussion, and other instruments. Below we have a few images and setups that show how the band looks when setup together in mass as well as the necessary product codes to simplify ordering. As those of you who collect this series will know, this is a very different type of release for us in that we have up to now primarily covered troops in combat. We decided to pick what we think is the most beautiful band in terms of the uniforms and have a go at something a bit different. We sincerely hope you enjoy them!

This is really amazing Matt- beautiful work! Congratulations

Matt,

what a brilliant set of figures ….. a complete Napoleonic band !!!

They look wonderful, and would love to see more 'on parade' figures to go with them,

well done,

John

Matt, as I said below, I am very pleased that you have made a full band of the 3rd Regiment of the Imperial Guard Grenadiers, the Dutch grenadiers, but I was wondering if you will be adding to the regiment with marching soldiers?

Also I have been checking my resources on the composition of bands from this era and from what I can see the band does have musician side drummers marching within the band,
but the Corps of Drums leading the band is made up of Grenadier Drummers who wear bearskins,
and a uniform similar to the Grenadiers, white with red lapels, cuff and such.

The Corps of Drums also had a drum corporal in charge of them and carries a mace, and is wearing the same uniform.
He deputises for the Drum Major, which you have so wonderfully portrayed leading the band.

I have a band, made by Tradition of London that I have painted myself, seen below, which shows what I mean.

If you do go ahead with these drummers and a drum corporal, maybe a few Sappeurs can add to this fine Tête de Colonne ???

John

Our plan to be realized over a course of months is to release the Dutch Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard marching along with them which will give you the soldiers and sappers resplendent in their white uniforms.

Matt,

thanks for that great news, looking to seeing them all together as pass by Le Emperour …. with officer, eagle bearer, sappeurs, drummers and this band that's come out today :)

Wonderful !!!

Wow! Not to take away the discussion of the beautiful First Legion Band, but John, I do love the Tradition of London Band that you painted yourself. They are fabulous! You sir are indeed a master painter. This is a much nicer set and more highly detailed than the commercial set put out by Tradition (which is no longer available).

Did you also paint up the Tradition Band of the 1st French Imperial Guard Grenadiers?

Robert

Robert,
thanks for your kind words about my painting :)

No, I haven't painted the Tradition set, but I have painted the band of the 1st Grenadiers, using figures I cast myself using Prince August moulds, with the addition of some intruments by Dorset Soldiers.

First Legion never ceases to impress when it comes to figures en masse. I don't know what it is about this company where you can either have one or a thousand, the pieces will always look mightily impressive. Great job on the band!

You are indeed a master painter John. Admirable job! :)

John, I meet a collector every year at our diorama dinner nights and all he collects is marching bands. A bit strange for me but the massed formations do look impressive. Regards Greg.

Just ordered band master
jingling johnnie band cymbal and band triangle
my front line for the band
it's a start
