Next couple entries in this thread will be a progression of photos of a "Flat" mounted on a canvas board I painted as a background

The 2 dimensional flat is a two sided Mounted Napoleon. It is about 75mm (1/24th?) in scale. Normally I see flats painted and displayed
from the front. I wanted to do something different, so in this case I posed and painted a scene from the rear.
First two photos are of the flat from both sides before cleaning and priming

Next I needed to decide on what the background would look like with particular care on the proportions.
Flats normally when mounted are posed in the front when applied to a pictorial backdrop, so background subjects should appear smaller.
I also wanted some historical relationship and therefore choose a scene with windmills over looking the channel as the little Emperor
rode up contemplating his invasion of England

With a well thinned artist oil of burnt umber, I sketched out the scene on the canvas board of 5x7, using a silhouette of the flat
for reference

Next I started to paint the backdrop using Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics

upon finishing the backdrop, the actual flat was test fitted for touchups and/or changes

Next post will be the painting of the flat and final framed result

Hope you find this interesting

Wow! Thanks for demonstrating how you make your backdrops, Walt! I've seen them in person and wondered about the process.

I look forward to your next post!

Prost!

That's a great way of doing a background, all I have done is use a print for that purpose, or just display the flat on a solid colour mat board.

I completed the painting on this set ( Franco -Prussian War) yesterday, but it will only have a mat board background when I frame it....

I will be looking forward to see your figure painted.

Hi Walt,

A flats thread? I like this approach. Keep going.

after trial fitting and touchup of the canvas I moved on to the Flat.
First time through using an acrylic undercoat i laid down an approximation of the colors I wanted. White horse
had a few shades applied to determine exactly what white and where to include the legs with the black or Paynes Gray shading of
hair,

also made note of light direction (in this case left to right ) with a few extreme highlights

Next up was the trial fit in the frame. key is to not cut off any critical painting on the edges and make sure flat bottom
(in this case the hoofs)
fit up against frame edge after cutting the base off the flat. Frame also casts a shadow
so I needed to apply another undercoat of white on left edge to maintain the light direction.

and now the final product after a very light coat of artist oils over the acrylic undercoat and
putting some dirt on the hoofs and bottom edge of coat. Flat attached with a very strong (but thin) double sided adhesive tape

Nice paintwork on Napoleon, and the background suits the pose,

well done,

John

Walt...
