Next couple entries in this thread will be a progression of photos of a "Flat" mounted on a canvas board I painted as a background
The 2 dimensional flat is a two sided Mounted Napoleon. It is about 75mm (1/24th?) in scale. Normally I see flats painted and displayed
from the front. I wanted to do something different, so in this case I posed and painted a scene from the rear.
First two photos are of the flat from both sides before cleaning and priming

Next I needed to decide on what the background would look like with particular care on the proportions.
Flats normally when mounted are posed in the front when applied to a pictorial backdrop, so background subjects should appear smaller.
I also wanted some historical relationship and therefore choose a scene with windmills over looking the channel as the little Emperor
rode up contemplating his invasion of England
With a well thinned artist oil of burnt umber, I sketched out the scene on the canvas board of 5x7, using a silhouette of the flat
for reference

Next I started to paint the backdrop using Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics

upon finishing the backdrop, the actual flat was test fitted for touchups and/or changes

Next post will be the painting of the flat and final framed result
Hope you find this interesting
