I just received my copy of Napoleon et les Invalides collections du musee de L'Armee .. This book is a must have for fans of Napoleon and of the French Army of his times . "To set the scene, a number of articles discuss a variety of themes, ranging from military history to art, before moving onto the history of the museum's collections themselves, tracing their own personal stories before they appear in their cases.
Attention then turns to the objects themselves. Richly illustrated, and full of detail, the catalogue covers not only the most famous items, but also some not seen before. Weapons, insignias, uniforms, medals, artillery, luxury items and those of a daily use all feature and all evoke the Emperor, his marshals and other individuals unknown to us but who nevertheless contributed to the glory of the Grade Armée." The photo's are beautiful , the text is only in French . Incredible book well worth the price just for the Photo's if you cannot read French like me ;) .. Best Regards Gebhard

Gebhard,

I've seen that book too, its great.... BUT not as good as the real thing :)

I spent a good half a day there in July making the visit the 'first port of call' in Paris, because when I visited in 2008, the new galleries were still in renovation mode.

This is a MUST for all Napoleonic interests, and being able to view the original uniforms, weapons and items from just inches away, you see all the details. There are about a ten mounted figures too, dragoon, hussar, chasseu a chevel etc, and seeing the equipment on the horse and rider, was brilliant!

You can't take flash photography, but with hand held, using a slow shutter speed, I have managed to take over 200 images that I use as a valuable resource in my toy soldier painting.

Next time, I may even get to see the other galleries, but I'll sure go back to the Napoleonic again.

Les Invalides is a great museum. However, for true Napoleonic fans the real "Mecca" is in Salon-de-Provance, the Musee de l'Emperi. This fantastic collection was put together by the Brunon brothers and holds artifacts that you need to see to believe. The amount of uniforms is outstanding. You will not be disappointed.

The format of "Napoleon et les Invalides" is patterned after "Les Tresors de l'Emperi" by Vincent Bourgeot. "Les Tresors" is outstanding.

Russ,

thanks for the feedback on Napoleonic Museums.

I have know of Musee de l'Emperi, but in my recent trips to France, I haven't ventured south of Paris.

But next time, I think Provence with bee top on the list... just have to make it in July again for the good weather AND Le Tour :) :)

Russ ,
That one is on the way , "Napoleon et les Invalides" was my First book purchase from France and it was a toss up between the two as to which one I bought First :) My copy should be here in about two weeks . After hearing that you really like your copy , I'm looking forward to mine arriving all the more .. I have never been to either of the Museums mentioned by you and Obee but of course they are both on my list of places to visit before I die .
I visited Waterloo for the First time back in September which was a life long dream come true , I have also visited the fine collections at the Forum in Leipzig and the Blücher museum and the nice little collection in Braunschweig several times you can see some pictures in my Albums if you like .. Thanks for the response all the best Gebhard

Thanks for the links. Tried finding these books on my own after reading your posts, but got NOWHERE. - Ken

Hello Dave ,
Your more then welcome , If you remember I posted pictures from some Museums in Germany when I joined the Social Group for Napoleonic fans now over a year ago . I was asking if anyone had been to Waterloo and about a possible Catalog of items from the Museums in France . You and Grognard were the only two to respond , there has not been a new post to that group in over a year . Oh well .. anyway these two books seem to have filled the void :) And I finally made it to Waterloo in Sept and spent two days just walking the fields and visiting places of interest . It was a life long dream come true and finding these two books will hold me over until I can get there to see the items in person and way beyond i think . Hey how is your piping coming along ? All the best Gebhard

Hi Guys,
LES TRÉSORS DE L’EMPÉRI L’armée de Napoléon La collection Raoul et Jean Brunon arrived. I'm absolutely blown away  I have been looking at it for several hours . If you are a Napoleonic collector you must have this book at all cost . This is buy far the best book I have ever seen showing original French items from the period . I know the price tag is not cheap but you owe it to yourself to have this book in your Library . I'm not kidding when I say i would sell off most of the books i have to own this one . It's in English and French text making it more enjoyable for us not able to read French . :):):):) I could not be happier unless I owned the items pictured :):):) All the best Gebhard

On my shopping list when I am in Paris in 2 weeks...:)

Now I found this on YouTube which provides a peak preview on this cool museum...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtYQhpSTb34

This museum is on my list of palces to visit when next I get back to France. Its in Provence, about an hour north of Marselles, so it would be great to vsit that aprt of the country, but I'd go in July, and see Le Tour flash past too.

Love seeing all those original uniforms right up close, just like in Les Inavides, and you can never get too much of a good thing :)

Thanks for the video, looks wonderful,

John
