New Beau Geste Durbar Fan Just Jumping In... (1 Viewer)

Hi Damian,

Yes that would have been really cool to watch The hordes charging at Omdurman would have been very interesting. I was in the UK a while back and my wife and I were driving up toward Scotland when we stumbled across a Mannor House that was open to the public and had a really fantastic arms collection in their great banquet hall and all through out the house. The thing I found most interesting was the display of captured chain mail and swords and shields from the campaign in the Sudan, I was really excited by it and my wife knew right then and there she was marrying a history geek. I wish I had taken the time to wirte down the name of the place but it was pretty amazing.

All the best

Dave

You slovenly soldier:p Forgetting to write down something like that. You really are the limit! Now we will never know and I blame you!:D :D :D

Ah my fanged friend I am glad to see you pop in during the daylight. I will look at my maps and stuff that I kept from my wanderings and see if I can figureout which site it a bit of a long shot but I do have a lot of paper from those days still bouncing around.

Has the Dias arrived?

All the best

Dave

It was supposed to be here yesterday. I made arrangements for the delivery. UPS stinks. Unrealistic Parcel Stupidity.

Jae asked me to post this. I hope it doesn't appear too small.

Thanks so much, Brad. What strikes me about the photo is how crowded in those elephants are, just like Damian has them displayed (nice photo, Damian... uhh, before you threw them out, that is). The baskets on top look so precarious. If you fell off, I'm sure you would have been crushed.

Thanks again, Brad.

Jae

Damian,

Who is collecting your trash and where are they dumping it? I liked the mass of soldiers and elephants with the Dias! The one elephant in the right front of the last photo was done by who? It looks familure but I am guessing for the maker. Clash of Arms?

Anyway thats a very nice little display!

All the best

Dave

I would never throw them out. That elephant is totally unique. It was made by a friedn of mine an eccentric retired post office techicina who is now quite ill from diabetes. I think he made his own mould for the elephant.

Are you talking about the little elephant on the right?

Hi Damian,

Your friend does great work! Also great to see Britains 1st Durbar Elehant in the mix. The 1903 Durbar is a lovely elephant I also noticed the Camel riders but no camels too crowded?

Great set up!

All the best

Dave

Damian,

Those are wonderful figures which are delightfully displayed. How could you ever bear to part with them? I wish I had been the lucky recepient of that treasure trove!

Great pictures! Thanks for showing them to us!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

I would never part with these figures. I am hoping to build a new home in the next 18 months in Pietermaritzburg where I now work. There will be a big room for my books and soldiers. Then hopefully I will get set up properly. What I am really after are some of the Beau Geste figures. My usual dealer has not been able to source them so I will need to try elsewhere, but at the moment I cannot stretch myself any further.
Regards
Damian Clarke

Hi Damian,

Did you attached the three pictures by mistake and this picture is the one that has the figures with which you would never part? If so, I am very relieved that you have retained some really nice Delhi Durbar figures for your collection. I very much appreciate the way in which you have them displayed. My compliments to you!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Apparently at the Battle of Omdurman there was a film crew on board one of the paddle boats that filmed the oncomming hordes but the film was exposed and lost. It would have been the first live footage of action and it would have been spectacular if it survived. The Delhi Durbar was about 3 years later so it is a pity that there was no live footage of this event as far as we know

Damian,

There are 4 films taken during the 1903 Durbar, specially during the main procession entrance in Delhi. One was taken from up the stairs of the Jumma Masjid, the other from the street coming from the Red Fort, street level, and the other 2 when the elephants were passing in front of the Main Hall. You can view them in the British Library, in London, after making a simple appointment at the India office. There was another one, coloured, that was destroyed or lost I believe. The shots are between 30 seconds and a minute and a half each. I can't explain how exciting it feels to watch those elephants in real motion.:)
