Actually This collection is subdivided in three:

- The charges of the Light Brigade : Russian gunners vs British hussards and lancers

- Thin Red Line : Scottish infantrymen vs Russian hussards

- The Battle of Alma : Coldstream guards only At this time

However the battle of Alma opposed on September 20, 1854 a French-British-Turkish coalition to Russian army!!! Hope will come French soldiers!

As for the collection Thin Red Line com from the Battle of Balaclava where these " highlanders' , rather than to form a square, extended in 2 lines instead of the 4 regulatory ones, thus the name “thin red line…” ; as for Russian cavalry it was composed of 3.000 to 4.000 hussards and cossacks of the Ural: many other riders should thus come!

Some fascinating photographs from the Crimean war:

Some interesting stuff from different eras on this website as well.
What a great collection of photos. Fenton was really good at his job. The group shots and individual portraits are so good that one feels like one is present at the scene. One thing I was continually shocked by was the ratty condition of the horses and the small size of said horses. Love the shots of Balaclava Harbor. -- Al

They certainly do give a certain 'grittiness' to the conflict.
It's not just the horses, I think apart from a few of the photos, all the others seem to depict 'rattiness'......camps, soldiers, buildings, uniforms.....

I suppose this was one of the first conflicts that was ever photographed.

Love the first photo with the cannon balls scattered around the valley.

This book has loads of photos (and illustrations as well as the usual paintings) from the war.
