Now that we have a moderation council, we have a new infraction system to go with it.

This information has been added to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) area. You can read the expectations of moderators here and the details of the infraction system and corresponding consequences here. The new moderation and infraction system goes into effect immediately.

The biggest change you will notice is that an infraction of any kind will automatically place the user on moderated status (all posts go into moderation queue and are not visible unless a moderator has reviewed and approved them) for no less than 24 hours. This will give people time to cool off and will prevent fights and heated arguments from escalating.

Best regards,

Shannon, I understand the reason why you need to start a new infraction system.

Geesh :( , I sometimes still wonder why members can't just ignore a posting and just move on rather than turning it into a "pis*ing contest".

I agree with you skeeterbuck......in an ideal world.

I think threadjacking is when someone takes a thread off of its subject and onto another on purpose.

I think it's posting items to a thread that are off the thread's topic, redirecting the discussion to a different point. At least, that's from what I've seen of the term in forums I belong to. Usually a discussion thread will head into some sidebars, but in a friendly discussion, everyone stays close to the topic, and if someone raises a point that is a new direction, he'll often create a new thread.

I would say there's a connotation, too, of deliberate, frequent and aggressive misdirection of threads.

Prost!

Hey who's going to see Night at the Museum 2. See that's threadjacking.:)

Oh boy, this is sounding a lot like court to me...:(

A court of law, or just Alex and I, acting like the court fools? ;)

:DA court of law, I was referring to the new rules, not to your posts, a court of law=a day in the office for me, not what I am looking for at this forum...

I think it's posting items in a forum, looking to start an argument. I base that on how I've seen the term used in various forums.

For example, when Andy announces a new K&C item, someone who deliberatly posts, "K&C is overpriced and all their stuff sux", that could be considered a troll, especially if the poster repeatedly posts that kind of response for every new K&C thread.

Two possible etymologies for the word's use in the e-world. One may have come from the meaning of "trolling" as "fishing using large nets cast and dragged behind a boat", because that's what the troll (back-formed from trolling, in this case) is doing, he's dragging for any kind of response. The other may have come from its use as a noun, a troll, and the old fairy tale about the Three Billy Goats Gruff, and the troll who hid under a bridge and attacked passers-by.

Great explaination theBaron:

Now, no one does that on this Forum, do they? Oops, I might be considered "threadjacking" here.
