New Mounted Glossy's (1 Viewer)

Hi Craig - I have another figure for your list.

Remember the sideways sitting lancer officer ? Do you know the one I mean? - the figure that was made by Britains from the illustration from The Army Gazette. I have a re-cast version - but it would be a wonderful addition to anyone's collection if he was a remake. As a casting, he can be made up into any of the lancer regiments c.1890ish. johnnybach

Yes you did - I haven't been around long on this forum - and I must admit that its an eye-opener. Lots of producers I dont know.

I have a few mounted Household Cavalry from a UK company called Asset - run by Colin & Ann Randall - which are very good. I've been trying to persuade them to do a mounted band - but no luck yet. When I get back to my collection - I'll try to put them on here - unless someone else can show you some first.

Sounds good johnny, Asset have some very nice figures.

W Britain are releasing a 17th Lancer officer in a similar pose for the redcoats sort of like a now meets then look.

I've never seen the old Britains sideways sitting Lancer do you have a picture? But I do know the they are releasing a new one in the Redcoats range as Scott said.

Yes jeff - that's the one I mean Craig. I think he's my favourite Britains of all time. I don't think this particular one is quite right though, as his sword (made from tin-strip)shouldn't be pointing upwards - but straight out to the side. Originals often got broken though, through falling over (some originals are well over 100 years old).

I have a re-cast version - done in red coat - blue plastron(16th Lancers). Because of the known breakage problem I referred to - I put him on a good solid "foot".

Sorry I can't show you any photos - as my collection lives in France - and I am at my daughter's house in UK presently.

Good news that new Britains are gonna produce him again. I'm not really surprised. Just wait till you pick one up - theyre so touchy-feely, you won't believe it!

The beauty of buying a few castings of him though is that they are so much cheaper -AND - as mentioned before, you can paint him as any Officer rank in ANY of the Lancer uniforms around the turn of the century. Mine is "The Colonel" watching his regimental mounted band go past, brought up at the rear with an Officer, trumpeter and four lancers - and I think they are drop-dead GORGEOUS - even though my painting is not in the same league as (say) John O'brien. DO get hold of one, and "have a go" you won't regret it - johnnybach

Sorry Craig - almost forgot. The "official" name for the figure is, I think,

Lancer Officer, turned seated in the saddle

but I have always called him "Sideways Sam" - I often name my favourites - does anyone else? and if so - whaddya call 'em?

johnnybach

That is one of the best positions they made back in the day. I do own a set of lancers with the officer sitting turned in the saddle. Looking forward to the new one only I wish they would offer it in other regiments like the 9th so I could use in my India/Durbar displays. Go over to my albums page and you can see it along with 4 lancers and several other sets and almost complete sets.

This famous Lancer Officer turned-in-saddle figure can be found for sale regulary on ebay. I have sent a few these figures (beat-up versions purchased off of ebay seperately) to Dorset Soldiers of England to have them convert/replace the original head/helmet of this figure with a helmet/head/turban/kepi of my choice then I repaint this figure with traditional glossy paints to complement/lead any of my old Britains or Wm. Hocker toy soldier infantry or cavalry sets. The same can be done with the original Britains Canadian Mounted Police turned-in-saddle Officer (makes a great British Mountain Artillery Officer or Highlander Officer wearing a khaki tunic and plaid trews etc.)

This is the re-cast version of the 16th Lancer Officer turned in the saddle that I mentioned earlier to Craig. I promised to post the picture earlier - and I'm practicing today. johnnybach

I like it a lot! I keep hoping to see this guy again in modern sculpting and paint. Maybe we'll get some cool new Lancers with the War along the Nile Series. Would be fun to have a bunch of Lancers at Omdurman!

Dave

Very nice Johnny thanks for posting :) hopefully we will see more mounted glossies soon from the redcoats range :D:D:D

Craig

I have been taking Britfarmers advice and practicing photography today. The battery has just run out - or - I would have photographed my 16th Lancers band and escort. Sideways Sam is the Colonel - so - if we get some good light, I will try to post a photo of them later on this week. johnnybach

Now that Britains are issuing the Limited Edition Standard Party of the Scots Dragoon Guards I was hoping we might see a few sets to accompany them in the Redcoats range? The ceremonial range is all well & good but just doesn't have the details & paint work of the Redcoats,

Here are the top ten mounted figures id like to see:

1) Scots Dragoon Guard - Kettle Drummer (Present Day)
2) Scots Dragoon Guard - Trooper (Present Day)
3) Scots Dragoon Guard - Farrier (Present Day)
4) Blues & Royals - Kettle Drummer (Present Day)
5) Blues & Royals - Trooper (Present Day)
6) Blues & Royals - Farrier (Present Day)
7) Lifeguards - Farrier (Present Day) (In proper bluecoat & black plume)
8) Lifeguards - Trooper in Winter Overcoat (1815)
9) Horseguard - Trooper in Winter Overcoat (1815)
10) 18th Hussars - Trumpeter (1854)

What would you guys like to see made?

Craig

Looks like two of the ideas on my list have been made :D ^&grin :D

Wonder if we will see any more down the line? Well I can dream ;) lol

Craig

Well, I am a soft touch when it comes to the period between 1740 to 1840. I would love to do a few from this long but interesting span to add to my own collection.
The figures in cloaks or greatcoats for 1815 would work well with the event, club and issue figures released to date.
I personally think some of the great uniforms from the 1820s and 30s are also under represented.
I think a few of the items on your top ten might make it sooner or later.
All the Best,
Ken

Hi Ken,
I just wanted to put my word in for those 1815 figures-you know we'd all buy 'em! By the way- any thoughts about another Nap Christmas scene? Still up for a commissioned one?
