THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY COLLECTION
THE BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM 1759

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, also known as the Battle of Quebec (Bataille des Plaines d'Abraham, or Première bataille de Québec in French), was a pivotal battle in the Seven Years' War (also referred to as the French and Indian War ). The battle, which began on 13 September 1759, was fought by the British Army and Navy against the French Army on a plateau just outside the walls of Quebec City, on land that was originally owned by a farmer named Abraham Martin, hence the name of the battle. The battle involved fewer than 10,000 troops between both sides, but proved to be a deciding moment in the conflict between France and Britain over the fate of New France, influencing the later creation of Canada.

The 78th Regiment, (Highland) Regiment of Foot otherwise known as the 78th Fraser Highlanders was a British infantry regiment of the line raised in Scotland in 1757, to fight in the Seven Years' War . The 78th Regiment was one of the first three Highland Regiments to fight in North America.
The regiment was raised in Inverness by Lieutenant-Colonel Simon Fraser of Lovat as the 2nd Highland Battalion and ranked as the 62nd Regiment of Foot in 1757. It was re-ranked as the 63rd Regiment of Foot later in the year. The regiment embarked for Halifax, Nova Scotia in July 1757 and, having been renamed the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot, or Fraser's Highlanders in June 1758, it took part in the Siege of Louisbourg later that month, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in September 1759 and the capture of Montreal in August 1760. It was disbanded in Quebec in December 1763. In the Seven Years' War, the regiment at 103 soldiers killed and 383 wounded.

These look really nice. Can't wait to see what officer and NCO figures will look like.

They are great looking figures. They do look different (kilt pattern) from the Fraser Highlanders offered before.

Always enjoy these new releases as they are usually accompanied with a wee bit of history about the figures and of course who doesn't like a wonderful new bunch of Scots in kilts.^&grin

Thank you JJD.:salute::

Hi,
Yes...I collect POA, I've got most of them including the original set of the 78th Frasers. These are depicted in the Govt. tartan like the Black watch. I'm not sure why JJ would now depict them in what must be Fraser clan tartan. It look's like the jury is still out on which was correct. In several of the paintings that are reproduced in the Osprey "Highlander in the French-Indian war" the 78th is shown in the Govt. sett, but on page 20 there is a print by Douglas Anderson of a highlander wearing the tartan of JJ's new figures.
In his major work on British Army uniforms 1751 -1783 , Carl Franklin in part states "The tartan worn by this Regt. was the Government sett,but one authority gives what could be a government tartan with red overstripe " his last point on the 78th is "Research has failed to find any details of the uniform other than white or pale buff, government sett,two black feathers in hat,numbered buttons with cuff flap three buttons and,gold lace" I would be really interested to know any authority JJ may have used for the current figures.....and ...yes I am still going to get these for my POA line-up.

And is isn't the sett the pattern minus the colors? So, the regiment could have added colors and still stuck to the government sett. Rather than government plaid. Been years since I blind and might have it wrong.

Osprey plate for 78th. Looks like John used the yellow version of the Fraser Tartan
