KNIGHTS OF THE SKIES
Ltn. Ernst Udet took over the black & white striped DR1 586/17 , which had originally been flown by Ltn. Hans Kirschstein who had returned to Jasta 6.
Udet took command of Jasta 4 and flew the aircraft called the "optical illusion", the stripes were designed to confuse an enemy attacking the plane. He added his personal marking “LO” and flew this aircraft until Jasta 4 was re-equipped with the Fokker D.VII.

Ernst Udet (26 April 1896 – 17 November 1941) was the second-highest scoring German flying ace of World War I. He was one of the youngest aces and was the highest scoring German ace to survive the war (at the age of 22). His 62 victories were second only to Manfred von Richthofen, his commander in the Flying Circus. Udet rose to become a squadron commander under Richthofen, and later, under Hermann Göring.

The ACE-15P set of Udet and Lola should be available in January 2013

Udet spent the 1920s and early 1930s as a stunt pilot, light aircraft manufacturer, and playboy. In 1933, he joined the Nazi Party and became involved in the early development of the Luftwaffe. He used his networking skills to be appointed as director of research and development for the air force. He was especially influential in adoption of dive bombing techniques and the development of the Stuka dive bomber. By 1939, Udet had risen to the post of Director-General of Equipment for the Luftwaffe.

Udet had the letters “LO” painted on the side of his aircraft. This was an abreviation for his fiances nickname “Lola’, Eleanore Zink.
He married "Lo" on February 25, 1920; however, the marriage lasted less than three years. They divorced on February 16, 1923. It has been said that Udet had many lovers.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

The Medium Mark A Whippet was a British tank of World War I. It was intended to complement the slower British heavy tanks by using its relative mobility and speed in exploiting any break in the enemy lines. Possibly the most successful British tank of World War I, the Whippet was responsible for more German casualties than any other British tank of the war. Whippets later took part in several of the British Army's postwar actions, notably in Ireland and North Russia.

The Whippet tank number 344, was named “Musical Box”, and was under the command of Lt.C.B Arnold. The exploits of Arnold and his 2 crew on the 8th August 1918, has been called the “greatest mechanical cavalry charge of the war”.

“Musical Box” was to move off at zero hour on the 8th August with the rest of the troops across that sector, but after passing the railway at Villiers-Bretonneux, they somehow became detached from the rest of the main force.
They became aware of a force of Mark V tanks and Australian infantry under fire from German Artillery. Arnold attacked the German artillery position immediately, first passing in front of the German guns and then to the rear, peppering the gun positions with machine gun fire. This timely attack by Arnold and his crew allowed the Australian infantry to move forward.
For the next 9 hours, “Musical Box” attacked German rear positions, They managed to disperse a whole battalion of infantry, destroyed an observation balloon, and a transport column of the German 225. Division.
The destruction of the “Musical Box” came when the Germans cornered Arnold’s tank and set it ablaze with artillery fire. Whilst bailing out of the burning wreck, the driver was shot, and Arnold and the remaining crewman were taken prisoner.

For more details on this single tank action, please check out the following book
"Fighting Tanks – An account of The Royal Tank Corps in action 1916-1919", published in 1929 and edited by G. Murray Wilson.

What a bunch of outstanding releases. I like the concept of a stand but something that looked like fake wood with the name of the plane on it would have been nicer. That house looks fantastic. Muy Espanol!

Tremendous releases! The long anticipated Udet Fokker looks like it is very much worth the wait. Very well researched and detailed, as usual. Pretty complicated paint scheme that looks extremely well done. It is a very attractive model. I am also really impressed with the Whippet tank. This just looks fantastic with a very used look. There are a LOT of must haves in this release for me. Well done JJD. -- Al

As a newbie to collecting, new releases are a conundrum!

Do I try and build up my Sudan, Jacobite and Crimea (oops! sorry, wrong forum!) or will I be tempted in another direction as the Cazadores look better every time I see them, especially with a nice backdrop building looming.

It's nice to see a couple more Mahdists so my Gatling Gun crew can have some new targets as a Christmas present (fingers crossed for some wounded/dead at some point - nothing against Mahdists but with numerous Highlanders and Naval Infantry firing at them from about 5" away in my display cabinet you'd have thought they'd have hit something - is JJ checking the sights before he boxes them up....?)

The Udet aircraft is the pick of the bunch and, these aircraft have become one of the main things I am interested in at the moment.

Some terrific releases in there, the Whippet tank (and figures with it) is just brilliant and I think I'm going to want that. The building looks very good and so do the RAF figures{bravo}}

Rob

Really like how the Knights of the Sky line is progressing. For example the ground crews and accessories are really looking good. Udet's Triplane is a great camo pattern, probably my favourite after the classic Red Baron. {bravo}}

The Whippet tank "Musical Box" looks absolutely super. So do the crew. More WWI AFVs please!

Thank you Mike & John, you can now have a well deserved Christmas break. For me the Sudan & the WW1 tank are on the list to Santa. Great to see all the accessories for the War Birds series, these no doubt make for a well rounded diorama, lucky those collectors. Cheers, Robin.

The Whippet tank...what a beaut, a must have with the figures....also the British ground crew.....{bravo}}
Wayne.

If JJ make any more Tommies like the guy on back of whippet then I'm in.

Rob

Great releases but I am wondering if there will be any future additions to 1812 and Ticonderoga?
Ticonderoga needs some French defenders and British casualties and officers.
I also hope to see some French Napoleonics for the Penninsular campaign and Austrians for Leuthen.

It looks like John will be expanding WWI on land now.
