BH-21
THE SECOND WORLD WAR,
USS BUNKER HILL,
Lt. CDR. ROGER HEDRICK.
(1pc)

VF-84 flew F4U Corsairs and was formed around a nucleus of veterans of VF-17, the Jolly Rogers. The new squadron's commanding officer was Lt. Cdr. Roger R.Hedrick, former executive officer of VF-17.
VF-84 was assigned to the USS Bunker Hill. As part of Task Force 58, the carrier and Carrier Air Group 84 (CVG-84) participated in the final drive across the central Pacific. Roger Hedrick was promoted to head CVG-84 on the combat loss of the air group's commanding officer, and Lt. Cdr. Raymond "Ted" Hill took over the fighter squadron.
VF-84 took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima; raids on Tokyo and other targets in Japan; the discovery and sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato and support of the invasion of Okinawa, including combat air patrol over the invasion fleet to defend against Kamikaze attack, ground support, and combat air patrol over targets on Okinawa.
On 11 May 1945, while off Okinawa, two Japanese kamikazes struck the Bunker Hill in quick succession, with a bomb penetrating to the pilots' ready room, killing 22 members of VF-84. Both the Bunker Hill (then the TF-58 flagship) and CAG-84 were knocked out of the war. Although VF-84 was reformed in July 1945 as an F6F Hellcat squadron, the war ended while it was still in training. While in the Pacific, VF-84 was credited with 92 kills for a loss of 4 aircraft and nine of the squadron's pilots became aces.

SECOND WORLD WAR AIRCRAFT CARRIER BASES
IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY

The Imperial Japanese Navy was a pioneer in naval aviation, having commissioned the world's first built-from-the-keel-up carrier, the Hosho. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, it experimented with its carriers, perfecting their design and construction. As a result, by the time Japan entered World War II and attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor in 1941, it possessed a fantastically effective naval aviation force.

**PLEASE NOTE AT THIS TIME THERE ARE NO PLANS TO MAKE ANY MODELS OR FIGURES FOR THE IJN BASES**

Look out Aviation collectors, Japanese aircraft will soon be on the attack.

Having read the disclaimer at the very bottom of the announcement for Jenkins’ IJN deck modules, I can only conclude that what we see above are intended for use with the KC IJN plane and figure sets. Sorry, I simply don know how else to interpret it.

You should have posted this BEFORE Larry Allen saw the carrier decks and assumed planes and crewmen were also in the works as he passed out and hit the floor like bag of cement..........................:wink2:

I also would have loved the possibility that John was planning Claudes, Zeroes, Vals, Kates, etc., but it doesn't sound likely, as least in the near future. -- Al

Oops, didn't see that statement. Too bad, a flight of Japanese aircraft on JJD stands against Corsairs would make an action packed display. I guess you could have JJD Corsairs attacking KC planes on the flight deck.

I wouldn't be surprised if "a certain Kiwi" wasn't involved in the manufacture of these sets. For that matter, there are several TF posters who have VERY nice collections of the KC/IJN planes, pilots and deck crew. Perhaps John has bailed them out, display-wise, with these beautiful new deck modules.

BTW, we could start a completely different thread on the size constraints involved in Jenkins' approach to all this. For example, if I understood JJ correctly, there's an absolute limit on how large some of this stuff can be. One such factor is the size of the shipping crates.

The new Corsair benefited from being a folding-wing design. Had it not been for this feature, the model might have been too big for the crate. This is, likewise, a limiting factor for two-seaters, often times being ten or twenty percent larger in wing/fuselage dimensions than single-seat types.

Sorry, don't mean to go on like this!:redface2:

Will definitely be ordering BH-21 . . . . As this is the only WWII/Aircraft Carrier set being released, June will be easy on my budget . . . . this will be a good time for me to catch up on some WWI sets that I have put on the back burner . . .
:smile2: Mike

Hah, buying one figure like this reminds me of the “good ole days” of collecting KotS! I’d pick up a pilot or crew one month and a plane the next. I liked it!^&grin

Have been waiting for the IJN carrier deck sections and here we go! Fantastic release. Chris

Water, {sm2} water, {sm2} ... get me something to drink .... dizzy .. so very dizzy.
Man, I am deep into a rabbit hole now. For years their is little for my interests and then ....

KAPOW

Decisions, decisions, decisions ....{sm3}

Okay ... if John holds off on Japanese planes and deck crew than that works for me. I have 55 - 60 Japanese carrier personnel so I m good there.
But the Saratoga sets and deck sections and DAM and Girls with guns .. and ....

One detail that I see John picked up on is the flight deck, decking.
It runs Port to Starboard on US carriers and runs Stern to Bow on Japanese carriers .... nice attention to detail.

Thanks, John
