NEW RELEASES FOR MARCH 2022
THE FUR TRADE
MOUNTAIN MEN – THE KEEL BOAT

A keelboat is a riverine cargo-capable working boat, with shallow structural keels, nearly flat-bottomed, which is sometimes also called a “poleboat”. These boats are designed for the navigation of rivers, shallow lakes and sometimes canals that were commonly used in America, including use in great numbers by settlers making their way west. They were also used extensively for transporting cargo to market, and for exploration and trading expeditions, because water transport was then the most effective means to move bulky or heavy cargo.

Keelboats were similar to riverboats, but like other barges were unpowered and were typically propelled and steered with oars or “setting poles”.
The process of moving a keelboat upriver was extremely difficult, depending on the current. Most keelboats were 50 to 80 feet long and 15 feet wide, with a cabin in the middle or at the rear, but were also sometimes constructed with an open deck.

Hey Mike .... that is truly a magnificent piece item, well thought out and (as always with John's work) the craftmanship in near perfection.
But ... :rolleyes2: ... at over $550.00, if you include shipping, that (IMHO) is not a steal.

If you breakdown the costs of the boat and pieces individually the Keel boat comes out to (approx.) $263.00, assuming $45/ea. for the packs and the 3 figures.
To drop over a half-a-grand does cause me to pause a bit and wonder if that is a good idea.

Maybe I am the only one these days that might think that way (old man syndrome setting in) but it would have been nice to pick up the pieces a one or a few at a time.

Still, that is going to be hard to resist.

Larry...

the package cost $488.00...

shipping should be free on that item from most companies...
and you added $62.00 for shipping...yea...maybe to the North Pole...

now if you want to piecemeal it out fairly...
John's foot figures for this range are $54 per...
3 included with the boat...that's $162.00
the packs are $45 per...that's another $90.00...

so I price the boat at $236.00...

where can you find a boat similar to that for $236.00?

but if you're gonna go that direction...you should figure in tax too...lol...

Evening,

I don't think there is another boat like that anywhere. Well, one that is not a toy anyway.

AND .. I agree with what you say maybe that the price is, ummmm :rolleyes2:... justified?

But my post was intended to point out, although the $488 + shipping (and possibly sales tax that some are now charging), is going to place that item well into the $550 - $560 range and that is high.

Maybe that is a "fair" price for the quality from JJD, but I still cannot call that, in any fashion a steal. I have three of John Corsair planes that were $280 - $290 and I see that those are a far more complex model than the Keel boat. Still, that is only my view and not meant to indicate any other point than to each his own ... I guess.

You have a great one, Mike and stay safe!

A QUESTION RE THIS MAGNIFICENT KEEL BOAT: Order placed.

With three Polemen, will there be a Steerman produced to handle this huge rudder????

Cheers Howard

My Keel Boat plus 10 figures from the March releases just arrived in Tassie this morning. The postie struggled up my steps with the weight of the parcel! Looking forward to cracking open the boat and figures this weekend.
