THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

The French army was manned by conscription, every 20 year old male was serving for three years. Most of the men that would go into the infantry were primarily from an agricultural background. The men who had worked on railways, public works, shipyards and telecommunications were going into the artillery.
Infantry Regiments were created on a local basis, similar to the British Pals battalions.
The peacetime army had a strength of 817,000 men, augmented on mobilization to 2,944,000.
During the war 7,800,000 men served with the “colours”, about 80% of the population of men eligible to fight.
Water was scarce in the front line, and the growing of facial hair led to the nickname “Poilu” (hairy one). The traditional nickname of the infantry was “Les Biffins” (the rag and bone men), initially to each other they were “Les bonhommes” (the lads), or as the war drew out, “Les pauvres cons du front” PCDF, (the poor bastards at the front).

Good Lord!!!

John has been working his rear end off...

that guy is like a machine...

Well double Yahoo! without doubt JJD is way out in front here, again just what Bob and I were after for the Verdun dio. Brilliant.....:salute::
Wayne.

Yes! Poilu to the left of me, Poilu to the right of me. I'm a very happy collector right now. -- Al

"1 in 5 of the French Infantry figures produced by jjD will be clean shaven"

I wonder if that means it will be pot luck whether you get clean shaven or bearded figures in a set? Or is a particular set either completely one or the other (if that makes sense)?

Not that it matters. They look GREAT.

Pete

Gosh, this is a spectacular release for we Francophiles. The Poilu are just brilliant looking. I count 4 separate 2 man sets in the group shots provided by JJD, in addition to the tank riders and the tank crewman. The tank riders promise to be very versatile to many different scenes. I can just see a dio depicting La Voie Sacree forming up now, or an assault on Le Chemin des Dames being readied. -- Al

John certainly knows how to compliment a vehicle with figures and equally the other way round. This must be a very tempting series for many now. Robin.

These are great figures.People say the French can't fight but whether it's the French & Indian War ,Napoleonic,FFL,or the Great War the figures are popular. It would be great to see units of Armee d'Afrique and Armee Coloniale.

Mark, African and Colonial troops would be a fantastic addition, especially if done in those spectacular 1914 uniforms. People who say the French can't fight certainly don't know history. -- Al

So true, the French-Canadian militia of colonial times had a better reputation than American militia.

Another great release by JJD. ^&cool Really like those Poilu's and the tank. So far WWI is an area that I have not collected due to competing demands but when I see these and the many other terrific offerings by JJD for this era my resolve weakens. :redface2:

Amazing how John can produce so many great figures!!!
Can't wait for the Tommies' following the tank. Germans next??
I really like the 'non combat' poses, they really set the vehicles off.

Pete

Yeah I was on his website and it is amazing what he has produced in a few short years.

Really nice release. The Poilu look great. The tank and crew will be hard to resist!

Dear JJD.......

I am a great fan of your WW1 sets....But a Quick question......when you released the French WW1 truck I bought one and it is a great set... but it comes with a catch....
{eek3}for some reason the cargo area has a canvas cover, which would be ok, if not for the fact that the canvas structure and the cargo area are made of one solid block {sm3}{sm3}so we cannot chose to have the truck on display with or without the canvas cover and at the sametime we are taken away the opportunity of having an open cargo area to load it with cargo or soldiers{sm2}{sm2
Following up on the new releases I say that for May we will be given the chance to buy the backbone of the British Expeditionary Force motorized pool in France.....But again the truck has great details....but no driver:confused::confused:The French one has a driver, was this an oversight? And again the cargo area and the canvas cover are all made out of one single block .......gee again we will not have the chance of having a free cargo area to enjoy some great loading options.....Could the design and marketing teams consider launching a version without the canvas cover for both the French and the British mechanic work horses and on doing so give us the collectors a chance to explore our imagination......or we are stuck with a short sighted manufacturing move ( suspect that making the tooling for a big lump called cargo area plus canvas cover ) is easier that tooling an open cargo area....that's a pitty.....

I received the French Infantry sets GWF-20 and GWF-21 today. I am extremely happy with both sets and am amazed at the sculpting detail put into each figure. I have sets GWF-22 and GWF-23 pre-ordered and now anxiously await their arrival. JJD's Great War range certainly has some Great Sets . . . . .
