THE SECOND WORLD WAR

AIRCRAFT CARRIER BASES

The Aircraft carriers during the second World War mainly had wooden decks.
The colour depended on the class of ship and when it was commissioned
It also depended on whether the ship received upgrades or had battle damage repairs.



To better camouflage the carriers from the air, the decks were treated with a dark blue stain, called “Deck Stain #21”.
It was approximately the same colour as the “Sea Blue” that the tops of the aircraft were painted during the tri colour scheme, but not as dark as the overall “midnight Blue” which aircraft were painted towards the end of the war.

Please note “BH CARRIER BASES” can be used as single, double or as a triple display.

The Double Base 19 ½” x 15” x ¾” (using any 2 of the 3 BH bases) can accommodate most 1/30 scale carrier fighters.
The Triple Base 29 ¼” x 15” x ¾” (using any 3 of the BH bases) can accommodate one 1/30 scale carrier fighter and 1 “parked” carrier fighter.

Please note BH Carrier Bases are designed to be displayed in sets of 3, “running Vertically”, as opposed to the IWA Carrier Bases which are designed to be displayed “running horizontally in sets of 2.

Looks like I'll have to acquire another card table. At approximately 33" x 33" I have found that a card table perfectly accommodates these plates . . . . I know what I'll be concentrating on for the remainder of this year and well into 2018 . . . Do to its size, I suppose an Avenger would be too much to hope for . . . .

Remember Mike, although the Avenger, the Helldiver, and Devastator are all large aircraft, they all also had folding wings, so...:wink2: -- Al

With the release of the Inter-War Aviation "SARA" carrier deck plates and the Boeing F4B-4's and now these WWII carrier deck plates and the WWII carrier planes that should soon follow, I believe this will be the start of a whole new era in TS collecting for me . . . . I am afraid that all previous interests of mine will be placed on the back burner while I concentrate on these new brilliant offerings . . .

Oh yes, I'm in! Been communicating with Andy, K&C, ever since he released the Corsair, urging him to release WWII USN deck sections. These are definitely needed for our WWII USN carrier acft. Maybe John will do something for IJN acft next. :smile2: These will replace my home made carrier deck. Pls excuse the K&C figs. Chris

So, if "BH" stands for the USS Bunker Hill, which more than likely is the case, then I am dreaming of the various types of aircraft models that John could considered for release. The Bunker Hill carried F4U Corsairs, SB2C Hell Divers, TBF Avengers, and F6F Hellcats . . . . . wouldn't that be a sweet looking line up of carrier planes . . . . .

I am still firmly in the 18th Century. But if an Essex Class Carrier is released, it will be extraordinarily difficult not to collect and my posts will be long and detailed. For example: Did you know that, as it regards the Avenger Torpedo Bombers, the only difference between the Grumman-built (TBF) and the GM-built Avengers (TBM) was the shade of green used in the Cockpit --- among the things we need to know in life!!!

As for aircraft and such, try Volume XII of the History of the United States Naval Operation in World War II - Leyete June 1944 - January 1945. Samuel Morison, Little and Brown (1958) plus the earlier and later volumes. In the Appendices, it will list by ship the Air Group, the number and type of aircraft in each squadron and commanding officers of the Air Group and of the three squadrons --- Fighter ( Grumman Hellcat); Dive-Bomber (Curtiss-Wright Helldiver) and the Torpedo Bombers (Grumman and General Motors Avenger).

So for Leyete Gulf and the Bunker Hill (Leyete June 1944 - January 1945) - very large naval battles between the US and Japan.

Much prefer Air Group 15 off the Essex though:
