Is this the new server for the Forum? I hope not! Its like a trip to the

Dentists! Over an hour to read new posts nothing but waiting and cannot

find server! Owwwwwww

Njja:eek:

NJJA - No - this is not the new server!

The current web host is currently showing us why they will soon be the former host.

In working to back up the Forum database, I found that for some odd reason I do not have the permission to back it up myself (due to the size). The tech person I called did not have permission either. So I'm impatiently awaiting a 'top level' person who apparently has permission to do it - but I have no clue when they'll get around to it. It's been on their desk for 4 days now.

Once we hear from them, we will probably have to close the Forum for a time while we switch it to the new server.

I sure hope it's soon. I agree, this is getting painful.

John and Pete,

If you think you are frustrated with the server, think of those of us who must access it through dial-up. I have been trying to work my way through today's postings for over two hours! Golly, I hope the problems are soon resolved!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Why fix it when it if ain't broke! Having a new server is to make the system faster not slower.

Well I guess the information super highway gets clogged up just like the transportation highways and byways.

I wonder how the frustration level is for the dial-uppers. Hope you fix the problem soon.

Dial up........come on!

No one has dial up.......

No.....thats just impossible!

Pat your not serious!!!

Njja:confused:

John,

It's only like a trip to the desert if you have a lot of cavities. I've been lucky to have only a half a dozen in my life.

Maybe the old server is trying to get even. If the new server is this responsive to your needs, I am very afraid:eek:

Hi John,

Oh, yes. I am quite serious. I live in a rural area and my choices for internet services are quite limited.

Since I am a patient person, I can live with dial up for now. The most frequent frustration for me is downloading pictures. It takes forever and many times I only see a fraction of the actual pictures. When people post five pictures per frame for several frames, I usually cannot completely view any of the pictures.

Another thing I do not seem to be able to do is to utilize the 360 degree feature of Treefrog's set pictures. I am assuming it is because of the limitations of dial up.

I know there are several other forum members who are still using dial up. Maybe, in the not too distant future, my internet carrier choices will improve.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Pat:

Thats unbelievable!!!! Well good for you, I'm glad you are patient!

I'm here in Atlanta on a DSL, it seems you get faster, and faster, then

lighting quick to S L O W D O W N.

My DSL is so fast that now my problem is the RAM in my computer.

I'm due for a new one this year, and I'm looking for a gig of Ram so I

can finally catch up with the DSL.

Currently I can usually have 3 or 4 sites open and working at the

same time.....ie Treefrog, Toy Soldier Chat, Ebay, Online Stock

Quotes........I'm sure before long your local phone company will

replace your current phone lines with an all inclusive DSL

server.

Njja:)

Pat, I well remember the bad old days of dialup when my wife cursed me for cuting into her telephone use, and I cursed posters with multiple pics on their posts :)

Is satellite an option where you are? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_Internet_access

I also recommend you get 'Mozilla - Firefox' which allows the opening of pages in tabs so you don't have to reopen/reload pages so often which slows you down more, it is also a faster than Internet Explorer: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

Hi Oz,

Yes, I believe satellite is an option, but the cost is skyrocket high. I am not certain I am ready to commit so much money for the satellite option. It would seriously cut into my toy soldier budget.

I know what you mean about cutting into your wife's telephone time. Purchasing a cell phone service for my wife was much cheaper than satellite service and she seems content to have her own phone and phone number.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

The sight is getting slower then a three toed sloth trying to algebra. I'll be glad about the move.

Day 5 and no backup database from Netfirms. It's a great host if you don't need tech support, but since we do and have had nothing but trouble and delay regarding keeping this forum running smoothly I can no longer recommend them as a host as I have for years.

I know you are all experiencing database errors (ie pages that don't load) because every time it happens to you I get an email from the forum telling me and they've been flooding in.

This is like waiting for a baby to arrive when the due date has come and gone!

SOOOO....I don't mind changing diapers, even really dirty ones, but I REFUSE to change anyone on the Forum who needs a diaper change regardless of the source of "contamination." :p

I wrote an article called "Who's Watching Your Host" for a group once.

Inosting companies these days tend to be guys in their garages with a few servers hosting dozens of sites on one box.

I'd like to post more but these "server not found pages" and "database errors" have been a major pain.

Can you imagine if our televisions behaved the same way as computers? Taking forever to load when you turn it on or change the channel. Freezing in the middle of the super bowl because too many people are watching or getting a virus when watching that makes it unusable. I'm no expert, but have always suspected that a major problem is that computers and systems are designed to do every conceivable thing when most people use them only for basic things.

Didn't they used to? They were called tubes and they had to heat up, remember?
