Question that I don't know the answer to, is the TV revenue enough to play these games profitable without live attendance and ticket sales? Doing the math, each team would have to get a crapload of the cut in order to make the week to week costs break even.

I watched a Bundesliga game today without fans.

It was like watching a local rec league at a Park.

No matter how great the players or play sports needs live audiences to enhance the TV experience. Without in-house fans any sport is lacking a certain energy, an energy that makes watching it on TV worth it.

It beats the alternative and that is the reality going forward.

Brad, I am just wondering if it is financially feasible to do so? I just can't imagine it is as a numbers guy but admittedly I do not know the answer.

I don’t know the numbers Tom but I believe not playing is less feasible because teams may fail otherwise, requiring governmental intervention. France shut down its leagues and the government is going to have to provide financial support, probably not to Ligue 1, the top league, but to all the other leagues. The Netherlands and Belgium shut down their leagues and part of the reason is that they didn’t want the remainder of the 2019-2020 season interfering with the 2020-2021 seasons because new lucrative tv contracts will kick in.

The TV money is enormous. My guess is that they would still make money without fans in attendance just not as much money. Thus, the greedy owners will push back. The idea of tax payers bailing out the multi-billion dollar NFL is awful. Tax payers already subsidize most of the stadiums. If they can't play a few games without fans without going under then good riddance to them. Maybe Jerry will have to sell his yacht. There are too many teams anyway.

I had no idea that fans in stadiums generate this much revenue.

From the article:
It is quite possible that the NFL will play its 2020 season without spectators in its stadiums. What would that mean in dollars and cents for the league?
The NFL would lose $5.5 billion of stadium revenue (the sum of tickets, concessions, sponsors, parking and team stores)—or 38% of its total revenue—based on figures for the 2018 season (ranking below). But the impact on the individual teams would vary greatly. For example, the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots would lose over half their total revenue while the Buffalo Bills, the Tennessee Titans and the Cincinnati Bengals would lose less than one-third.

The effect is greater in baseball. Ticket sales, concessions and the like make up a significant component of revenue.

Very true. MLB has a problem because they stand to lose over $600K PER GAME if the games are played without spectators. Doesn't take a math wiz to figure even a half season will break many teams at that loss rate. -- Al

I’ve thought for awhile that some teams may not survive this crisis. It would be one thing if it was known that this epidemic would definitively end this year but we may still be facing it when the baseball season is supposed to start in 2021.

Best case scenario, the first few game are played without fans and then later in the season they can start attending. Worst case, some players start getting the virus, there is a second wave in the Fall and the whole thing collapses. Never underestimate the greed of the owners though! They can forge their own reality if it means more profit. Just think about all the hue and cry about player safety right before they expanded the season to 17 games. Fans could be dropping dead in the stands and the owners would have lackeys dragging their dead bodies to a dumpster outside the stadium while denying there was any problem.

Not sure why at sporting events, especially outdoor ones, you can't have fans, say 1/3rd the capacity of the stadium, I guess the problem is most people attend games with other ticket holders, so how can they interact during the game 6 feet apart? Also, who gets tickets, most NFL games are sold out, so how can you tell 67% or so of the season ticket holders they are out of luck?

All it's going to take is for a few players to become infected; if player A, B and C on the Patriots all test positive on Monday, how can the other 50 players be quarantined for two weeks, the team will forfeit two games then.

I understand we all want to get back to the new normal and sports is important to a lot of people, but I think pro sports should just shut it down until 2021, no nothing until baseball next spring, football, basketball and hockey next fall unless they come up with a vaccine in the meantime.

I'm not holding my breath that a vaccine is going to be found...…………………………..

Cynic much? So tell us. Are players greedy when they hold out, threaten to switch teams or play hard ball via their agent? What about the people who work at the stadium? Dont they want the highest pay they can get? Do the refs give their "excess income" to charity? Do the companies buying the ads want to spend as little money as possible, while the networks want to charge the maximum the market will bear? When fans gripe about the cost of the tickets and such, thereby seeking to deny the players, vendors, support staff, etc more income, arent they being "greedy"??

Reminds me of a well worn verse from a popular book: Let he that is without sin cast the first stone...

We have to attempt to resume some semblance of a post Covid or Covid normality (“post” is probably the wrong term since we are still in that reality). Why should a resumption of athletic activities be any different. Certain countries are trying to do that. Why not us? Why should we not attempt to at least see if we can do it rather than simply say shut it down.

If it was as simple as shutting it down for 2020 and resuming athletic activities the way they were pre Covid perhaps that would make some sense but there is no certainty that come the beginning of the season for each league in 2021 we will have a vaccine and thus be in any better position than we are now.

Because players, coaches, trainers and staff can get the virus and spread it all around the team, that's why, it will create a huge mess, read the example I gave, one player gets it, the whole team gets shut down for two weeks.

Playing in empty stadiums is a stupid idea, actually it's moronic...…………..

That’s why leagues are working on detailed plans. The MLB one is around 70 pages long. I’d rather try than just throw up my hands, as many seem want to do. Problem solving is what people do best. This is a problem but every problem is a challenge and for this challenge there is a solution.

You may think playing in front of an empty stadium is stupid but get used to the reality because that’s what it’s going to be like for the near future.

LOL. Yes, perhaps its cynical to expect folks to have principles that might allow them to check their greed even temporarily and not risk public safety to make a bit more money than the millions or billions they will still make. If fans get sick and die, that will be ok. It will be their own fault as no one forced them to come to the games. Right? What's a few more dead folks now? Throw them in the dumpster and play on! Jerry & company need a bigger yacht.

I don't think it's stupid.

I know it is.

So much for home field advantage.

Going to be interesting to see how 53 players, plus coaches, training staff and others on an NFL sideline are all going to stay 6 feet apart, same in an MLB dugout or NHL/NBA bench, not to mention how NFL, NHL and NBA players are going to stay 6 feet away from each other on the field, court and rink.

Idiotic on so many levels I lost count.

Show me one owner, just one, who has expressed the sentiment that it will "be ok" if fans die. Ill wait.

Gosh, so you also dont believe in individual responsibility? Hmmmm

Millions and billions dont fall from the sky. Even the uber rich have to earn it. Every day. You think maybe a few oil millionaires lost a dime or two when oil prices went..NEGATIVE? Or did their greed save them? Again, Hmmmmm

You know who really takes it on the chin when arenas arent open? The people who work the games, vendors, parking attendants, ticket and security people, etc. They really do need the income. Or maybe they can just get paid for doing nothing, for however long it takes. Gosh, Socialism, what a wonderful concept! Hmmmmmm

My God.

He's being sarcastic.

No owner has expressed sentiment that it will be ok if fans die.

Well, now that I think about it...…………………….

I understand that. The issue is the underlying message.

Remember all those movies where the "Military Industrial Complex" is the big bad wolf? There are now plenty of people who buy into that theme, regardless of the company in question.

Repeat a sarcastic "lie" enough and it becomes perceived truth.

Im sure you wouldnt like falsehoods, sarcastic or otherwise, about yourself being spread around.
