I wonder what you do when you have no more room, especially when new things that you like keep coming up. Do you:

a) Sell part of what you have?
b) Buy a new house?
c) Leave the game?
d) Put the boxes away and watch/photograph sets from time to time and or rotate?
e) Become more selective?

I have sold and bought but I am not there yet, probably some of you have been there or are there, mostly those that have a lot of years playing the collecting game. Any thoughts?

I'd love to do b) but I don't have the cash for the closing costs right now

I settle now for d), given the limited horizontal space that I have.

I'd love to do what Louis does, or what Jim Hillestad did, which was to buy a property up in the Poconos and build a second house, just for his collection. I have a spare room that will be my display room, eventually, but I have some other renovations to complete, first.

For me it would probably would be e.I wouldn't sell any of it and i'd hate to box any of it up.I have just finished filling my two figure cabinets and now have to get another,when that is full then i have a problem.But i'll cross that bridge/move that house when i come to it

The house is big enough for several more years of collecting so when I'm out of space my challenge is to convince my wife that the shelves dedicated to toy soldiers need a little more place....

A few years ago I did b), bought a new home and built myself a three room 800 square foot display space.

Now that it is full too, I have e) become more selective in what I buy and plan on d) rotating sets as time goes on.

I think rotating is a good idea , its just such a mission to box sets up
etc it kind of puts me off a rotation policy [ also a woefull rugby world
cup stradegy ]
In the past I have sold stuff as my collection evolves , but for now
I,m just going to try and collect at a very modest pace and stick to
a few core ranges .

Being more selective in my purchasing and selling or swapping less desirable sets has worked best for me.

Looks like A,D,E for me. Lots of stuff to sell. Less display space calls for rotation. Also more discretion for me whilst the space problem becomes an issue.

Let us face facts. There will always be someting new or something better. As has been pointed out to me I can not get it all. I did give it a good run though.

Not being a WW1 or WW2 collector, saved me... no tanks (Ok, ok... I'm lying... I do have 1 Winter Tiger by CS), no trucks, no jeeps, no planes, no big guns, no scenic destroyed backdrops, and then of course none of the figures in this era. Just got lucky that I'm not attracted to collecting these 2 periods of history even though I am interested in and read and view whatever I can about these periods.

I was going to do an a) of my modest collection (I have around 30 figures in my liquor cabinet just above the fine scotch) to make way for some new ones. Strangely when my wife saw me getting the Britains Napolenics ready to sell she protested. Very strange I thought. I asked her why and she said they look so good!

About tanks, I gave up on 1/30 or 1/32 tanks, only have 3 or 4. So I now have a small collection of 1/72 and 1/50 or 1/48 tanks (Dragon, Corgi,the like), built in the past (2 Solidos come from my childhood) and expect to shift it to my office.

Yes, being more selective and on occasion sell stuff that has become less desirable because of new stuff works best for me. I don't own much and don't strive to own thousands of figures. Just some things that I love most. So I can still handle it.

I'm alot more selective now than in the past. If it's not Crimean War or Agincourt related or to a lesser extent the Boer War, I just admire it and move forward.

I also enjoy getting kits and painting them myself. Gives a more "Hands on" aspect to the hobby.

Well, I had the same problem 3 years ago. I had some 10,000 figures (mostly plastics) and LOTS of problems to put them on my shelves. I could display some 3,000 on a VERY tight environment, so one day I finally got tired of it and started selling the plastics and half the metal (napoleonics) I had. I sold over 9,7000 figures, and have a few (nearly all of them Elastolin and Conte) plastics still around. My collection is now much smaller, but I will finally work on some Dark Ages dioramas I dreamt about but had no room to display!

In the future I plan on having no more than 120/150 metal figures and no plastics at all anymore. My plan is to have 3 or 4 nice dioramas, including figures of Celts, Germanic Barbarians, Vikings, Saxons and Normans. I am still at the begginning, but my Conte Warlord range playsets have some terrific buildings (including Stamford Bridge!), and the future looks bright from my point of view.

Less is more when you have less bulk and more quality!

Good point, I admire your focus and discipline (coming from experience I guess). I find it hard not to want...EVERYTHING... At the moment I have WWI, Napoleonics, and Britains FIW as my core, but I also have some WWII (with dioramas),ACW,Crimean and Roman figures...A recipe for disaster...

Hi, Viriato! It's like they say in America: "Been there, done that." I wanted one of everything there was out there and I had nearly all the plastic toy soldier that existed and a few hundred metal ones too. I also had add boxes and boxes of 1/72 I only bought because I hoped someday would be made in 1/32 (that's a very poor reason to buy anything, right?).

But enough is enough and one day I asked myself: What do I really like? And I mean REALLY LIKE: what is my favorite period? And I decided to collect jut that. I picked up the Dark Ages as Vikings in particular and Barbarians in general were what I really liked. I don't regret making my decision either. I only wish I had made it earlier, because only now there's room to work on the dioramas I dreamt to build for very long years.
