I have heard everything now . Sometime in the future we have to move on and stand on our own two feet. Australia will become a republic it is only a matter of when the time is right. Chris.

Your right... Australia has been standing on it own two feet for a long time and has it's own identity but is happy to have Liz as Queen and people like Kate and William will ensure we stick by the Royal's for quiet some time yet....... there is nothing wrong with retaining our links with the Brits, they dont stop us doing our own thing....we have the best system of goverment in the world....its a shame our pollies let us down ....my opinion ...regards TomB

What a daft thing to come out with Rob when the state pay for everything in the first place ? Which I think is a problem with this country with to many people living of state hand out and poor working man paying for it all :rolleyes2:

I think around the time Charles and Camila got together after Diana's death the republicans had a slight rise in popularity over here, but following the royal wedding , jubilee and now the arrival of George there has been a surge of patrioric pride and the question of a republic rarely gets a look in. The 70% in favour reflects this rise in popularity and I think a lot of this is down to Harry William and Kate .

Would be hard to stomach a president overe here, who would we end up with ???? President Blair, President Boris Johnston, President Simon Cowell!!{eek3}

I think you will find things Royal contribute a lot to the success of tourism industry in the UK. Whilst some may have had enough of the new baby etc there are probably a lot of businesses grateful for the extra product they can sell to UK citizens and to tourists. The newspaper and magazine industry (including overseas) will have been helped by increased sales. That means more income and jobs.

Even here a British shop is going to benefit from my wife wanting to go there to get a Prince George tea spoon and we might buy something else at the same time and will be eating at their Fish and Chip shop. The product that shop sells come from the UK so also good for your economy and I suspect they will sell a lot in the next few months.

I find the interest in the Royal baby etc more worthy than the drivel about a Kardashian baby.

Just my two Pence worth.

From my side of the ocean, William and Kate look like a nice, young, good looking couple that just had a baby. Two of young cousins just did the same thing and really happy about that. European Royalty are pretty harmless these days so it's good news that I won't spoil by saying "what about starving this?" or "Taxes that." I never met a baby (or a dog) that was a jerk unless the parents (owners) were.

Look at all the ceremonial stuff William Britains has made over the years thanks to the Monarchy. Model railway makers have also been able to cash in producing models that are named after Royal family members.

I sorry I just don't see the downside to them and I don't think you could ever convince me either !!

Agree with both of these. It would be very naive to think the RF don't bring millions into the country from tourists. Whatever we think of the RF and being British, millions around the world think them an icon of Britain. People also think we all go to work on Red Buses, make calls from red phone boxes and talk like the Queen. ^&grin I do talk like the Queen, but that's due to a botched prostate exam{eek3}:wink2:

On a serious note, I don't festoon my home with pics or china plates featuring Kate and Will, I don't dress up as a Union Jack and camp outside Buck house in the hope of seeing the Queen heading for the garden privy, but I do believe in the Monarchy. They are part of our history, heritage and tradition. They need to tighten their belts in these difficult times and I'm glad the ' outer ring' of Royals has been taken in a bit. But the alternative to them is bland, boring and means nothing.

Just my opinion as a Bus traveling , Bowler hat wearing Brit:salute:: Oh and get this, I cannot stand Tea!:salute::^&grin

The issue is not about whether you can sell Britain’s toy soldiers or Prince George tea spoons …

It is far more important than that…

Does someone by birth have the right to rule over us?

How can someone hold power for which they are not elected?

And before people say the Queen is just a figure head – note that only the Queen can dissolve parliament and chose the government.

Why are they unaccountable for what they do? For instance, they are exempt from Freedom of Information Act

Why do MP’s swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen as opposed to their constituents?

These are social and political questions, so not for this forum, but they are why one could question whether there is a downside to the notion of monarchy
