In July this year, Prince August the Irish toy soldier maker, advertised a Bastille Day Competition where hobbyists could submit images of figures from their Napoleonic Range of 54mm moulds for judging.

As I have been casting, assembling and painting my own figures from PA moulds and in particular their 54mm Napoleonic and 7 Years War Prussians so I thought I’d submit some images and see how I get on.

The big decision was what figures to show? I have a British Infantry, 95th Rifles, French Infantry, Foot Dragoons, Artillery and Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard (on parade) with their band so I had a wide choice.

The rules were to submit 3 images of the same diorama, so my final choice was the Tete De Colonne of the Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard and featured the Standard bearer, Officer, Sappeures, Drummers, Grenadiers and a massed band. This is an example of the band figures I submitted, but not the final images.

It must have really impressed the judges because yesterday I received a congratulation email from Michael O’Brien (no relation) at Prince August to say that I had won!!!

A fellow collector and maker Alain Lestinne, who I met in Lille, France on holidays in 2008, was second place with a well made set of figures in a tavern diorama from the “At ease” moulds.

John mate,
Could not happen to a nicer bloke. Absolutely well done cobber. You could win a prize anyday with the LH conversions and the vehicle repaints that you do for me.
Cheers Howard

Not in the least bit surprised you won John, well done mate.....{bravo}}

Congratulations. Well done. I admire you guys who not only collect TS, but also build and paint them.
Just started with painting my first TS which still leaves lots of room for improvements. :rolleyes:

Not surprising that those Napoleonic figures have won the prize - they are outstanding.

And don't forget these are from "homecasts". A careful look will also show that some figures have been modified, by adding in extra instruments - but so well done, you would never know

Very well done indeed John, and a well deserved winner. jb

Thanks for all your kind comments guys....

By the way, jb, in the terms of the contest there was to be NO Conversions, so I had to that these images below to fulfil those requirments.

The former image of the band I posted in this thread DID have conversions.

Ah! I see - so you had to make your band a bit smaller than the one with additional instruments - to comply with the rules! Makes sense - as Prince August was sponsoring - they didn't want conversions. Pity that - the band looks even more spectacular with the extra instruments. jb

Congratulations John on winning PA contest. Your figures look great. John

Well done Obee...congrats.......TomB

John, I have always been impressed by these particular figures that you had made up. They are, IMHO the benchmark in home casting. I forgot where I saw this first. either TSMF or the Collecting Toy Soldiers. Either way congratulations and a hearty "Bloody Well Done!"{bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

I just opened this thread...congratulations John...I have seen your splendid work on the forum for a long time...I'm sure you deserved the award...

I forgot where I saw this first. either TSMF or the Collecting Toy Soldiers.

Thanks for ALL your kind comments about my win and the band which I cast and painted.

The full set of the band included some conversions unsing the PA bodies, but with extra insrtuments that PA doesn't have moulds for.

YES, it was pubished in Toy Soldier Collector in 2010, and its still available via thier website,

so check it out here : http://www.toysoldiercollector.com/index.php?GOTO=22&RNZ=803323

Also I have set up a webpage with deatils of the uniforms and layout of the Tête de Colonne here : http://members.upnaway.com/~obees/soldiers/band/band.html

and that is a valuable resource to those who are wnating to form a band.

regards,

John
