Old Toy Soldier Auctions - Trophy Results (1 Viewer)

Johnny,

You might want to check on other T & C auctions, to give your wagon-to-be flavor.

Happy days Scott :salute::

I remember seeing the shire horses Young's Ram Brewery at Wandsworth used to deliver beer to customers pubs within a mile or so of the Brewery, the horses were being used right up until 2006 when the brewery closed and production moved to Bedford

Cheers

Martyn:)

Seems Tetley's retired them as they were no longer economically viable (cut into their profits more like :()

I seem to recall, that there was a spate of re-introducing Dray-horses at some point in the UK- because of the increased cost involved with delivering beer by motor-transport - (fuel. road taxes etcetera), - especially in pubs close to the breweries - around late 60's??? (can't quite remember exactly when!).

Also, I seem to recall. it was felt that it was a good Public Relations exercise for customers to see the horses and old delivery methods being used in high volume places like town centres.

Didn't seem to last though - mores the pity! jb

NB My daughter has e-mailed the guy in USA who has one of these models for sale, that I have an interest - as he says he will only ship within USA. We will just have to see. Ironic really, as I probably was living in Cardiff when this thing was made - and lived about 5 miles from where Len was making them!!! johnnybach

Hi Brad - thanks for the tip - 'cos I fear I'm a bit of a novice at this sort of thing. Thankfully, my daughter is a bit of an expert at it - so is giving me a hand - after all - if I do manage to get hold of one of these - she will inherit it one day!! ( Well -that's the deal we've struck!).

I'm not quite sure what T & C means though - is it Terms and Conditions???

Town & Country, it was the name given to their civilian series. Good luck with the brewers dray also:)

Sorry about that. Sometimes I use too much shorthand.

Since we know that Trophy influenced certain companies, for the ignorant (as in me) who would you say influenced Trophy?
Brad,
If you look through very early Trophy catalogs you will find that Trophy sold a lot of "slightly modified" Phoenix sets under Trophy name, I have no idea if Len had any agreement with Phoenix: but a few American Trophy dealers sold them from Trophy catalog. Early Trophy civilians had a strong influence from Under Two Flags figures and actually "copied" the themes then the figures got improved dramatically over the time. Marlborough and VC miniatures had a big influence on Trophy as well. Early VC military figures actually look like Trophys ( the owner and a sculptor for VC was from Wales as well).
Rare Diana Wedding carriage used carriage and horses from Marlborough, but the figures were made by Trophys.
I have a lot of catalog pictures and actual figures to illustrate above^&grin

Hi chaps - thanks for the tip-offs and advice about what I now know is a "Town & Country" , Hancocks Beer, Brewers Dray - made by Trophy of Wales - in my old home-town. :smile2:

As an update for you - my daughter has contacted the American vendor - who has confirmed that he would be willing to ship it to France - if I was successful with a bid.

So - I'm in with a shout of getting one! Thanks again to all who have contributed to my education about this so far. I'll let you know in due course how I get on - thanks once again. johnnybach^&grin

Thanks Martyn - that's absolutely fabulous - never knew it existed - it's wonderful - off to e-bay right now - johnnybach

Sad to say - my first experience of e-bay was not as succesful as I would have liked.
My puny bid ( thought $200 might swing it!), was swamped - as the Trophy, Hancocks Brewers Dray eventually went for a whopping $300.{eek3} I would have also expected to pay around $45 for first class postage - so - wasn't to be this time. Enjoyed the experience though - and will keep looking.;)

However, all is not lost - as I was tipped off about a casting version of a Brewers Dray from the UK Toy Soldier company of ATS, by another forum member ( Thanks Scott). I have ordered one of these to paint myself (which I much prefer doing anyway) for a far more modest £50 or so.:D

Now I have to choose a suitable Welsh Brewery to make it up as? Ah - choices!!

Thanks chaps for the experience - and your help and advice. If ever you come across another - perhaps in need of some care and attention - or a re-paint - remember me - and give me a shout perhaps? Thanks again, ^&grinjohnnybach

Sorry you didn't win it as it would have a lot of meaning for you. We look forward to your creation though.

Trophy prices can be a little crazy!

Johnnybach
It is a shame you didn't win the set but I'm looking forward to your finished Brewers Dray:salute:::salute::

I will keep a look out for a Trophy one that could do with some TLC :wink2:

Cheers

Martyn:)

Thanks to both of you for help and advice - a good deal more exciting than I thought it was going to be - and clearly someone really wanted that nice thing! Thanks for the offer to keep an eye out if one should turn up again though. I certainly know about it now - so will be looking again too.

I will do a number on the casting version - though it is a little different to the Hancocks one. I do know that Brains Brewery in Cardiff took over the old Hancocks Brewery site - so I am thinking of making the new model a Brains Brewery Dray. (It's my favourite Beer anyway).

This is what it looks like - though I won't have the young lad and his Mum:

Johnny,

Brains does brew some tasty beers.
