Old Westerns being rerun (1 Viewer)

Even the bad westerns back in the good old days were still good. And the good ones were classics. Anything after about 1975 was awful for some reason. It's like Hollywood forgot how to make a decent western or tried to imitate the old ones without success. I have a "Western" channel on cable that has a lot of good ones. I read that old TV shows are making a big come back with the digital TV because it opened up some additional channels and these shows are inexpensive to run. Even Jack Benny shows up from time to time.

Cheyenne was another favourite of mine, along with Bronco starring Ty Hardin

Cheers

Martyn:)
Yep ! two really good westerns.....would like to have a Western cable here in Aust..most cable here is rubbish...TomB

**nny you mention Benny. A local cable station has been running a Jack Benny-Red Skelton show marathon all day. 30 minutes of Jack, 30 minutes of Red. The station was running George Burns last night. Kind of neat to see all of the classic old stars that appeared on these shows. -- Al

Those are good shows, made along the same time with shows like Maverick, Sugarfoot, and such. Still think the early 30 minute Gunsmoke episodes are the best. Still being shown along with the 1 hour versions on our Western Channel. No one tells you to 'Get out of Dodge' quite like Matt Dillon. ^&grin -- Al

How did I forget about Maverick ! ! !.....liked the humor in the show...matter of fact.....I have just recently watched Support Your Local Sheriff and Support your local Gunfighter....TomB

Your mention of Jack Benny hit a chord with me - with regard to Westerns. Jack and friends did have a long running Radio show - and even made a film featuring Jack, as unlikely as it seems, as a Western Star. It was, of course, a send up - as the pic below illustrates, as Jack tries his hand at Bronco busting. The Film??......"Buck Benny Rides Again" - slightly before even my time - made in 1940. Great **n:D jb

How about Whiplash, the Australian Western which starred Peter Graves

Cheers

Don't forget Pancho, Jack:wink2:

Just for you - enjoy..............(you can make a sandwich, whilst the bread advert is on), I suggest corned beef!^&grin

"Adios Amigos" - jb:D

Johnny

Thanks for the trip down memory lane - now here is a remake screaming not to be made!

New old shows have started showing up on a couple of my cable stations. In addition to the Bonanza and Gunsmoke reruns, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, the High Chaperral, Big Valley, and The Virginian are now in regular rotation. My childhood hath returneth. None of these are on my Western Channel either, which already runs Lawman, Have Gun will Travel, Wagon Train, Rawhide, and Gene Autry. We live in a great age.^&grin -- Al
I wake up this AM (Happy New Year to all) and find that the station that is running Roy, Hopalong, Lone Ranger, and Virginian has also picked up Tales of Wells Fargo and Alias Smith and Jones. Can't be long before Death Valley Days shows up. Also saw the series Iron Horse not too long ago on one of these stations. There are enough old TV westerns and movies to keep a couple of dedicated western stations running 24-7 till Doomsday.{sm3} -- Al

That was okay for the time but it was crummy as were a lot of Aust shows made those days (and these days)....The Yanks make the best cowboys...the Brits make the best comedy....the only good Aust series was ANZAC....about WW!,,,,,that was the best....TomB

Tom, I don't know about Australian TV but your movie industry seems in good shape. The Aussie western/frontier movie "The Proposition" was one of the best movies I have seen, whatever genre. It was a cracker!^&grin -- Al

Hi Martyn. I love Quigley. Some beautiful scenery and an excellent bad guy. Really liked the outstanding sound track, as well. ^&grin -- Al

Turned on the Western Channel this afternoon and found that they have added Hugh O'Brians 'Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp' to the daily lineup. It is just episode #4 (1955), so it must have just started this week. Another classic from my youth. 'Bat Masterson' was in rotation but has dropped off, so I find myself wondering when 'Wild Bill Hickock' and 'The Gray Ghost' will show up. :smile2: -- Al

Remember Bat Masterson..."The Grey Ghost"....never heard pf that one......you are fortunate to have a decent cable service...but I count myself lucky I can find heaps of U-Beat "Childhood stuff" on UTube....cant beat Elvis and the old Rock&Roll....bit young for the fourties ...but...not for the fifties ....best music and movies ever made (take the computer gen and special effect from a lot of the current movies and what do you have....good entertainment I agree.. but not the same class of movie)......Doris Day sings..Take me back to the Blackhills....I sing Take me back to the Fifties....cheers TomB

Tom, The Gray Ghost is not really a western, but one of the rare tv shows about the American Civil War. It was a half hour show that lasted just 39 episodes from 1957-58. It was about John Mosby and starred Tod Andrews. It has always stuck with me because of the subject matter. There was one other ACW done in 1961 called The Americans. It was about a family who had 2 sons, one joined the north, the other the south. It only lasted 17 episodes. Again, only memorable to me because of the subject. -- Al

Al...thanks for that....would have been of interest as I have a passing interest in the ACW...maybe because of the Black and White Ministerial Shown and all the Southern music....I believe ...the guy who wrote the very popular Southern music ( Foster ?) died without a cent in his pocket,,,,,**nny world we live in...cheers Tom
