I went to the twilight markets tonight with my wife and found these for sale.

First picture is of 4 Kiwi men it looks like Egypt (right hand corner possible pyramid), on the back it say's the following.

To Mother with love from Douglas. From left to right D.Gourley, G.Curtis (Dunedin), W.O'Keefe (Invercargill), T.Sproule.

The towns for the first & last men are there but i can't quite make them out.

Second picture has no writing on it, just the sign in the foreground & the German soldier in the background./

Thanks for sharing those photos! They're always an excellent addition to a collection, and help round out any references we accumulate. I have some cartes de visite of German soldiers and officers, from the Empire, that I collected as uniform references.

Prost!

Those are very interesting post cards! Thanks for sharing!!^&cool^&cool I have a pretty interesting WWI hand held slide viewer, which came with about 20 slides, all war related, one of which shows a bunch of allied soldiers (mostly French) around the remains of a downed German fighter. The slides are black and white, so I couldn't tell you the color of the German Fighter, but I always wondered if it was a famous German Ace.

Thanks Louis,

I have a bunch more that I picked up in Belgium and will post for reference for other collectors.

I like New Zealanders in the first picture, I can see a few figures being converted from aussie to kiwi.

Norman,

Regarding the top photo which was probably taken in France.

I'm not sure if you are inclined to research or not but I think some time spent on New Zealand's Archway (National Records) site and their First World War soldiers records would allow you to identify the unit and location/time frame of the photograph.

I think Douglas on the left may be Private David James Douglas Gourley-

and T Sproule on the far right may be Private Thomas Sproule of the New Zealand Entrenching Battalion who died as a POW in late July 1918-

There is a Private William O'Keefe from Invercargill here-

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=21382061&digital=yes

and a Private George Curtis from Dunedin here-

They all seem to be South Islanders, possibly Otago Regiment when they enlisted. It would be worth going through the entries in their records to see if they were all together at some stage.

There is a story in that photo:)

Thanks Scott,

I might just dig a little deeper and see what come's up, I just couldn't leave this picture at the flea market.

The tag I use Norman508a is to remember the 19year old on my fathers side who died at the rail embankment at Bullecourt.

Thanks again Matt.

Matt,

That tank is one of the British tanks knocked out during the First Battle of Bullecourt (I'm sure you know the story).

A few more post cards out of my collection, this time reproductions of enlistment posters.

Thanks Matt

A few photos of old newspapers my wife bought in Bruges for one euro each, they were tucked away in the back of a souvenir shop if there is a bargain she will find it. ^&grin

The first one is from 1896 and shows French cavalry forwarding a river.

The second is from 1917 with the front cover showing French soldiers being awarded & the back cover showing wounded Canadian soldiers after the capture of Couralette.

I will have to frame them soon & put them on the wall.

I picked these prints up in Ypres near the Menin gate, they are by a British artist who lives near the gate.

The first print is titled, He is not missing, he is here.

The second print is titled, Waiting for the whistle.

I was going through some more cartons in the storage container my wife bought this afternoon found this photo album.

While this may not be everyone's cup of tea, it does contain some interesting photo's.

The photo album covers one German soldiers service from 1932 until the end of the war and has some photos of his units reunion in 1983.

Norman,
Congrats on your wife´s purchase of the container at the auction...
You now have a lot of Militaria...memorobilia....
The album I guess gives you an indication of who could possibly be the owner of the stash...He died and the contents of the storage area was put for auction so as to cover the rental costs.
Or may be the whole lot belonged to a collector that passed away...
Do post more pics of the album, or send me a PV as to how to see them, I am very curious to see first hand....
Cheers
Luiz

Hi Luiz,

We think it was a second hand dealers stock as the items are so random, but the military items just keep coming.

We have books ranging from the Boer war to Vietnam, Post cards from Waterloo drawings to Second world war photo cards and photos World war 1 to World war 2.

We even found some really early toy soldiers, if there is a image on a post card or photo we probably have it.

I think we picked a winner on this one, as its not even the unit we wanted.{sm4}

Matt

Two framed prints i have found today.
